Hi all, I'm new here but I really hope someone can help me. I recently bought a External blu ray writer from Ebay. It's listed as a Hitachi lg bt10f. When trying to install it on my Windows 7 laptop, via 2 USB cables, my laptop started searching for drivers for the device. But instead the only thing it found was as a initio combo device class, but when I put a blu ray into the device, nothing showed up under my computer or in device manager. So I restarted, plugged the device in again, then it installed a FJ Camera.
I really don't understand what is going on, as i can't find it in device manager and it doesn't show up under 'my computer'. I also can't seem to find any drivers for Hitachi lg bt10f. I really hope someone can help as I haven't got a clue what to do.

I have one or three thoughts.
Are these two 'USB' cables plugged directly in to your laptop or are you using some form of adapter ?
One of these 'USB' cables is for power and I do wonder if the usb connection is providing enough 'juice'
Drivers would typically be on a CD (to be installed BEFORE you plug in the unit) or stored on the unit itself.
Doesn't the item come with any instructions ? -
yeah they are plugged directly into the laptop usb ports. it comes with 2 sets of instructions, both in very broken english. it doesn't come with a CD. one set of instructions says it doesn't need a cd that it's just plug and play.

this is what it says if the device doesn't install on the instructions, but i don't understand it;
"if the drive doesn't show on "my computer" please check there is "USB universal Host controller" in "My computer/control panel/system/drive manager" if you can not find it, you have to restart computer, in CMOS, in "Chipset features setup" or "ntegrated peripherals" , change "on chip USB" to enabled, saved, and restart computer, check if found USB CD-ROM"
Do you understand what it is talking about? because i couldn't find anything saying any of the stuff it mentions on Windows 7 -
I do not have Win7. But there should be a 'Device Manager' (not Drive Manager) there.
You should see your USB controllers there.
The reference to CMOS are the settings in your BIOS. These really should be set as default and you should not have to worry about them.
But your USB is working since Win7 detected the drive being plugged in. So that is NOT the issue.
I am more concerned in the power connection and your laptop providing sufficient to power the drive.Last edited by DB83; 27th Dec 2012 at 03:39. Reason: addit. thoughts

Hi I am experencing a similiar problem to what you are getting . I have a LG-GP08LU10 slim externall DVD external writer . On my laptop A samsung RV511 the drive worked without a hitch . I tried it on my I5 desktop computer and my P4 desk top computer and had various problems ,mainly concerning USB . I plugged it in on the front of both computers at USB ports and had problems not found if I plugged it in the back of the computers it worked better . I really wanted it to work on my P4 ? When I pluggeed it into my Samsung laptop it worked perfectly on only 1 lead ? I thought I had got over the problem by plugging it in back of comp on my P4 but Nero came up with a problem and wouldnt burn the disc. I am running Win 7 pro on both my I5 and P4 and Win 7 Home edition on my samsung laptop.

Both explained drive issues are down to improperly sustained power via the used usb connectors.
Many usb connectors only can serve too low voltages, and power/voltage is still the biggest issues with usb - clearly a design failure from the start.
You already tried something by changing the used connectors. Also check the usb controller/setup in the devicemanager.
Use adaptors and you call for trouble.*** Now that you have read me, do some other things. *** -
Sometimes you get them with two usb power cables. But if it works with another computer this could be it.
