  1. so i have a 1920x1080 mp4 movie that i'd like to play on my ps3. xilisoft video converter can convert it to an avi. so i then use aviaddxsubs which makes the avi into a divx with subs. it plays on the pc fine but it isn't supported in ps3.

other avis that i downloaded and convert with aviaddxsubs work fine in the ps3.

i tried a couple of formats in xvid4psp, but it takes 4 hours for conversion, i don't know which to use. the two formats i've tried were very bad quality, even with names like "550mb xtreme". i'd like to convert to a 1024x720 size of dvd quality avi that can play on the ps3. any program that does it better than xilisoft and xvid4psp?

  2. that's for adding subs and converting to divx. i'm asking for help with converting a mp4 to avi that would play on a ps3

  3. I think the problem in converting with Xilisoft is that it creates an AVI with encoding which the ps3 cannot recognize. Doesn't anyone know how to choose the best encoding option in xvid4psp?

What kind of AVIs are being created by the Xlisoft converter? You might run one of the AVIs through MediaInfo (in Tree/Text mode), cut and paste the information here, and someone might be able to tell you what the PS3 doesn't like about the video.

  5. weird, i read the media info from vlc, and it seems to be a mpeg-4 file even though the extension is avi. (converted with xilisoft) vlc media info codec: h264 mpeg-4 avc part 10 res 320x240 frame rate 25 decoded format: planar 4:2:0 yuv full scale

If you are re-encoding the video then you might as well burn the subs into it and if you do that then you can re-encode to a MP4 file which means you can leave the audio "as is" and you'll probably get better video quality (although the encoding will take longer).

Also, make sure your encoder creates AVIs using DivX or Xvid to encode the video. The PS3 likely only recognizes those video codecs, for AVI videos. Using MP3 for audio with the AVIs is probably also a good idea, too, though the PS3 might be a little more forgiving about the audio codecs.

It appears you have an AVI using h.264-encoded video, and most standalone players that play AVIs aren't likely to accept it, save for media players like the WDTV.

(I haven't tried to play AVIs on a PS3 in quite a while, and don't have one around at the moment to test. )
