    A couple things -

If its a high def file (720p or higher) than a normal dvd player won't play it (I know of no dvd player that will play hd material at all - that doesn't mean there aren't any but it is not the NORM for a sd dvd player to play hd files of any type).

Also if its not fat32 formatted you most likely won't be able to play it. (granted bluray players are more and more capable of reading ntfs formatted drives but it is much more uncommon for dvd players to be able to).

You say "avi" but that doesn't really mean much. Its a container. Avi can pretty much hold any video you want it to. If this is a sd dvd player that can play digital video files it will most likely be only xvid and divx files (in the sd world - 720x480/576 or lower). You might have one that can do wmv or other more exotic varities but almost certainly not h264 as that is limited to bluray players and game consoles like the xbox 360 and ps3 and specialized media players like the wdtv player or one of the roku models.

    Check your players manual.

Though it won't be very specific of exactly what bitrate and settings of the file type it can play. However it will at least say if it can do divx or xvid or wmv.

Oh one other thing some dvd players can read sd mpg flies.

(also check the front of the player - it should have a divx logo on the front of it if it can play those files - unless its a real no name player then it might not)
