  1. When you purchase a standard film from the Playstation store the video format is (MNV) not sure what that is; however, the resolution comes in a 720x480 ratio. This information is easily accessible by looking up the individual files info. The problem I am encountering is when I convert my DVD's to mp4 format using DVD Decrypter and Handbrake. When these films are finally transferred to my PS3 the ratios differ from 720x460-720x360. I've looked up numerous different tutorials on the Handbrake presetting for a PS3 or m4p conversion process but to no avail. I would be extremely grateful if someone could shed some intelligence upon the situation.

You DVD has either 4:3 or 16:9 Display Aspect Ratio, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image), and stored in same resolution/frame size for all dvds.

So Handbrake RESIZES the video to 4:3 ,16:9,2.35:1,etc Pixel Aspect Ratio and removes the black borders. The video should then look okey even if it has different resolution as your dvd source.

But you can keep it as 720x480 if you change the Picture settings: Cropping to custom and set it to 0,0,0,0, change anamorphic to none and set it to 720x:480. But I don't know if Handbrake will set the display aspect correctly in the mp4 then. If it wont the video will look stretched.

  3. Your advice worked perfectly. Thank you. The only problem I've noticed is that both the 720x480 & 720x360 look identical. I have excellent vision, so if I am unable to notice it I'm assuming its not a difference. Can the ratio of DVD converting effect the quality of a film? I set the RF to 19, but I am reluctant to go any lower knowing that the file will increase 3 fold without any significant increase in quality. I use the normal preset when converting to mp4 for my ps3 I've been told this is just as good as the old "ps3 preset", I'd just like to confirm?
