Hi,
I replaced my 9800GT card with a 640GT. The driver is the same (latest). Now the GPU feature is lost! In the preferences of vegas the card is listed correctly, when I hit the test-button of the Sony AVC, GPU is not available any longer. I use Vegas Pro 11 64 bit and Win 7 64 bit.
Any idea?

I had the same problem after I upgraded my driver.
To fix it, go to Device Manager, right-click the video card, and search for new drivers on the internet.
Problem Solved! Guar-ahn-teed!

Go to nvidia website and download the driver you want to install, if you haven't already.
Run the installer, and check the box "Option For Clean Install. This will reset whatever is causing the problem. Everything default. I had the same issue with this, and pulled my hair out for months. This solved it for me.
I'm running a Toshiba Qosmio Laptop, and I couldn't get Cuda support in Vegas 12 Pro, also my graphics driver was preventing awakening from sleep. I don't know what I did to cause this, but I assume it was my settings, or something corrupted. I don't know, and don't care.
I'm just happy now. -
Did you turn on GPU Acceleration in the preferences? In Vegas?
When you start Vegas, it reads off what it's doing as it loads. Do you see it mentioning GPU Acceleration?

I can see the card in the preferences. But the GPU test in the Sony AVC encoder fails.

I have updated my VP 11 to 12. And now CUDA is available! Perhaps the GT640 is too new for VP11. Thank you all for your tips. Please excause my poor English.

Just curious, as I did not see any mention regarding it in the thread. Were you running the latest update (build 701 for Win7 64)?
-
I was running build 701 (64 bit) on Win7 Professional 64 bit. There was a hint in the message of aedipuss, five posts above.

Yes, it is the same WHQL driver. It recognizes all new features of the GT640.
Interesting: I still get the fastest results with CPU only. Rendering with the 9800GT is a little bit slower, and with the GT640 the slowest method. -
the 9800gt was an older high end performance card, whereas the gt640 is a cheap low end card. the results are to be expected.

I quess, you are right. It seems, that the memory bandwith is more important than the number of streaming units:
9800GT: 112 streaming units, 256 bit memory bandwith
GT640: 384 streaming units, 128 bit memory bandwith
My 9800GT is cooled passively (long as a surfboard), the GT640 has a (much smaller) passive cooler, too. I don't want to use another fan in my silent PC. Can you recommend a high performance card for VP12, that is passively coold? -
Many review sites have found that GPU encoding doesn't scale very much with the power of the GPU.
For example:
in the case of GeForce and Radeon encoding, there’s no difference in speed between graphics cards costing 100, 170 or 330 euros. Quality is strictly identical from one card to another
And the quality is inferior to x264, even when x264 is using settings that are faster than GPU encoding (on fast CPUs).Last edited by jagabo; 26th Dec 2012 at 10:07.
