  1. I have avi files that use Lagarith or Huffyuv lossless codecs. The goal is to play them on the iPad. I've tried HandBrake and Avidemux but couldn't open the files.

I tried to use Avisynth with the command AviSource("c:\path\video.avi") but neither Handbrake nor Avidemux could open the script.

How do I work with these avi files without transcoding to another codec first?

  3. Yes I have the codecs and can play the files. I need a way to convert the avi to m4v/mp4 directly.

Neither Handbrake nor AviDemux can open AviSynth scripts directly. With AviDemux you can use the included AvsProxy program, then File -> Connect to AvsProxy in AviDemux.
