My Marantz dv4001 has developed what I call motor (or spindle) noise, but strangely, only when playing CD's. I do not notice the noise when playing dvd's. The noise is coming from the unit, not thru the speakers.
Local shops tell me it's not worth spending the $100-200 for the repair, but I am very satisfied with the 4001.
I do not need blu-ray, and the current offering of non blu-ray players makes me wonder if this unit is worth saving.
Any suggestions?

it was an ok value when it was selling for $69 new a year ago but you're not going to get any value repairing it. used ones can be had for $40 on ebay. dvd players start at $20 or blu-ray $40 discounted this time of year.

I know that you are hoping that someone will respond with a solution to your problem that you can do yourself that takes little time and no specialized knowledge and is very cheap. That is unlikely to happen.
Today's players are designed to be thrown away when they have problems. It is not logical to spend roughly two to three times what the player cost to repair it when you can be a replacement for much less. You need to consider that even if you get this repaired, eventually the drive will fail. Whether that happens in one year or many - who knows? Philips still sells cheap DVD players in the USA. You need to check specific models, but many of their DVD players can still be made region free, should you care about that. No, your player is NOT worth saving, but do we really need to tell you that? If you want to get it repaired anyway, it's your money to spend on it.
