Fanless video cards for triple monitor setup.

Hi guys,

I'm looking at building a quiet PC so i'm wanting a video card that doesn't require a fan.

So nothing spectacular, I won't be doing any gaming at all.

However, I do need to run three monitors (I will be running windows 7 ultimate) and a friend of mine suggested that the best way to do this is to have two cards.... I can see the logic there as not too many video cards have 3 outputs.

So what would be the ideal fanless video card for this purpose?

Hello

I know that you are asking for fanless video cards, but I honestly have not used one in many, many years. The cards I have now, an Asus NVidia GeForce GTX 660 and a built-in Intel HD 4000 serves my purposes extremely well. The Asus card is VERY, VERY large and VERY, VERY quiet! You would never even know that the computer is turned on, even when under heavy use. Admittedly, though, I have a very large computer case.

What is the reason for running three monitors? (I'm not questioning your decision to run three monitors. I just want to make sure it is possible for you get the result that you want, and that there is not a better way to accomplish it than to use two video cards.)

Well you can not get video cards that support 3 monitors but you can AFAIK get video cards that support 4 or even 8 monitors.

Or with the right mb you could have one card for two monitors and use the on-board video for the third.

You can get 'quiet' cards but these have some form of cooling. And. surely, if you are going to run more than one monitor from a card you need cooling.

And to be frank, my card has a fan but I would not know it is there.

problem is that for a video card to do that it would require a decent amount of onboard RAM (normally 2 to 3gb's) and power....most video cards w/o a fan will do 2 with no issue but 3 is stretching it. A simple solution is to get an ati 6670. That'll do 2 easy and buy an External Video Card. They seem to be very popular. It works through USB.

To eleborate more on my previous post:

Like DB83 outlines, I have the EXACT setup of a 2 GB graphics card driving a 23 inch HD monitor and a 47 inch 3D HDTV (and the card has just the stock fans), and a motherboard (Intel DZ77GA-70K with Intel HD 4000 Graphics Adapter with 1 GB allocated memory) hooked up to another 23 inch HD monitor. I have not had any heat related issues and no performance issues. I also have an Intensity Pro card installed and connected to one of the HDMI ports on the TV so that I can do real time previews from After Effects and Premiere Pro.

The ati 6670 fanless card you linked to is an Eyefinity card, which supports up to three monitors.

However, with Eyefinity cards, when there are more than two monitors, the additional monitors must use a display port connection. An active display port adapter is commonly used to connect a non-display port monitor to the display port.

With the three-port Eyefintity cards it is supposed to be possible to use clone mode (to display the same desktop on all three monitors), or use normal extended desktop mode (to expand one desktop to use all three monitors in a horizontal arrangement), or use Eyefinity (to arrange the the three moniors verically or horizontally, use portrait or landscape mode, compensate for bezels, etc.)
