thanks aedipuss. i have to be 100% honest, i bought the projector on a recommendation by a friend as he has the same one. i am also "new" to the whole 3d wave. i didnt think i would get into it and probably wont, all depends on the quality of the 3d i guess. Are all 3d blurays that you can buy SBS? i see that some 3d is top/bottom, anagyph or SBS. thanks

Assuming you have a 3010 or better model Epson projector, where all 3D comes in via HDMI signalling...

All depends on what your "MVIX" media player can do and whether those "rips" are formatted correctly. I've never heard of MVIX, but it looks like a Boxee-style HTPC/mediacenter. Frome what I can tell, NONE of the MVIX products EXPLICITLY support 3D, meaning "acknowledge" the 3D formats and re-composite it into a format (HDMI-Frame Packing or HDMI-SbS or HDMI-T/B) that is automatically supported by your projector.

Without that support, what you will have to do is pre-format your files into "frame-compatible" (aka standard 2D-compatible) formats such as anamorphically squeezed SbS or T/B. Then the media player will play it just as if it was playing a standard 2D file (because for all intents and purposes, it IS a 2D file) and then you will have to MANUALLY turn on 3D and MANUALLY set the 3D format option to either SbS or T/B.

If you want a better experience, you'll either have to find a media player that specifically, explicitly supports 3D or get a 3D blu-ray player and watch real BD3Ds on it (not rips, which may have already been compromised).

BTW, when you get your reciever if it isn't already HDMI 1.4-compatible, you DO NOT want to put it in the chain in-between a "3D-aware" media player (assuming you get one) and your 3DTV/Projector, otherwise it will "tell" the media player that it only supports 2D and the media player will drop back into 2D mode, cancelling any Full-HD-3D benefit you might have gotten by upgrading your player. Put your receiver AFTER your TV/Projector in the chain (assuming the TV/Projector has enough HDMI ports and can "pass-through" the signal). If you can't do that, you'd have to get a HDMI 1.4/3D-aware splitter.

cool. the receiver is a pioneer elite model with HDMI 1.4. i plan on plugging all the components into the A/V receiver (bluray player, media player, direcTV) and then using HDMI out to the projector, where i would normally plug into my tv in the old set up. but your saying to plug the media player directly into the projector? it has two hdmi inputs. Can i not just plug everything into the receiver and only run one output to the projector? sorry if im talking in circles.
    thanks

    Quality comparison:
    • BD3D (3D blu-ray) = 1920 x 1080 x 2 views (L+R) @ 24p, or 1280 x 720 x 2 @ 50p/59.94p
    • SbS = 960 x 1080 x 2 @ same rate, or 640 x 720 x 2 @ same rates, IOW 1/2 the quality
    • T/B (aka O/U) = 1920 x 540 x 2 @ same rate or 1280 x 360 x 2 @ same rates, IOW 1/2 the quality (but with slightly better 3D depth)*
    • Anaglyph = same as BD3D, but colors SEVERELY COMPROMISED! Plus, Anaglyph is actually OFTEN not a consumer option (plus you must specifically have the correct glasses for the color coding, e.g. Red/Cyan). IOW less than 1/2 the quality
All BD3Ds that have been made in the last 2 years (since they came out with the official spec) are MVC (=AVC/h.264 + Full Quality Dependent 2nd stream), which gets recomposited at the HDMI port to HDMI 1.4 "Frame Packing" layout.
BDs prior to the spec, and DVDs, could be a combination of SbS, T/B, Interlaced, or Anaglyph - there was no consensus. And none of those were Full-HD-3D, unlike BD3Ds.

If the receiver truly is 1.4 compatible, plug all the stuff into IT and your should be good to go...

should work ok with all into the a/v receiver. that's what i use here to play 3d mkv from nas box. you'll just need to "tell" the projector that it's a 3d movie you're playing and what type(sbs or o/u). it's a button on my tv remote labeled "3d" of course.
