  1. I've borrowed a Panasonic DMR-EZ48V VHS/DVD Recorder.

Do these type of machines typically have a setting to switch the on screen display off, so that when I press play on the VHS I don't get the PLAY graphic recorded on the DVD?

I've tried searching but it's a bit of a needle in a haystack regarding search terms.

If the "PLAY" graphic is recorded on the DVD, it has nothing to do with onscreen display.

To turn onscreen status messages on/off:
Go to the Panasonic's Setup menu.
    Select "Display"
    Select "Status Messages" then "OK"
    Select "OFf" then "OK"

DMR-EZ48V manual, page 62, top right.

  3. I don't know for sure that it does record it but I've seen it in other people's DVD-Rs and it really bugs me, so just wanted to get rid of it before I started!

Thanks for the Manual and page pointer, I'd have never found it being labelled 'Status Messages'.

  4. Hmmm... here's a curious thing (I've never used a machine like this, so appols if this is a n00b quesh)....

I recorded 30min VHS footage in HQ mode. The VOBs come to about 3GB and I can physically see on the disc surface it's only been written on by about 2/3rds. But MacOS reports the disc as being a full 4.7GB?? In Toast when I went to dupe the disc it claimed there was only 6MB free.

I looked in the structure for extra files, but there were none, and like I say I can see it's not been fully written to. What's going on???

You have little to no chance to get an answer to that question by hi-jacking your own topic.

Start another topic but this time in the Mac section - you really should know that by now.

DVD recorder write the disc in DVD-VR which alllow some editing. If the the disc is record once (not rewritable) and if you delete some titles the free space is not updated, only the menu is updated. To play the disc in others player the disc must be finalized.
The DVD recorder used to write the footage will see the correct free space available.

  8. Thanks danno. I forgot to mention the disc was a DVD-RW, but I didn't delete anything from the disc or alter it. I just recorded one 30min title and made it create a top menu. (For some reason it didn't ask/allow me to finalise, I think because it was -RW, not -R)

Thread continued here at DB83's request.

Actually, the issue may not be Mac related now that you have enhanced the post.

You have made copies assumedly to send out to friends and relatives and I fear that noone will be able to play these disks.

I suggest that you post a full folder and file listing for the disk - you may invertingly have used video recording mode instead of video mode - former will ONLY play on your machine or identical models.

  10. Here's the folder structure, albeit upside down (root is bottom of list):

    1.0M /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_RM/VIDEO_RM.DAT
    32K /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_RM/VIDEO_RM.IFO
    32K /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_RM/VIDEO_RM.BUP
    1.1M /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_RM
    1024M /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB
    32K /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_0.IFO
    32K /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_0.BUP
    12K /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO
    12K /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.BUP
    1024M /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_2.VOB
    371M /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_3.VOB
    62K /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.VOB
    2.4G /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS
    2.4G /Volumes/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER

Oddly OSX is now reporting the disk as the correct volume size. Toast however still thinks it's 4.7GB. ??

    As I thought.

    Video Recording mode.

Hope you have not sent any of these out.

  12. How can you tell it's Video Recording mode from the file structure DB83?

    The extra folder "Video_RM"

If you check "What is a DVD" from the left menu as you read this reply you will see that a standard dvd only has two folders "Audio_TS" which is optional and "Video_TS"

You need to look at your recorder's settings and change the recording mode to "Video Mode". Many people, including myself initially, get caught out with this old chestnut. Of course, the people who designed the dvd-recorder did not help by naming a mode "Video Recording".

  14. I just made a new recording using a DVD-R disc and the resulting disc was 'normal'. The filesize is as expected, and the file structure contains only the VIDEO_TS folder. I think this DVD Recorder auto selects Video/Video Recroding Mode depending on the media inserted.

So for the previous disc, could I just forget about the VIDEO_RM and burn only the VIDEO_TS folder to a new disc, or is that asking for a whole heap of trouble?

If onscreen display is turned off maybe PLAY is not being recorded at all. Did you try playing those recorded discs on other DVD players?
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

I do not think that will work because if it did then the original disk would play in any player - the player would simply not see the additional folder.

Others may have different ideas but the way I would go about it is to 'rip' the video stream by using mpegstreamclip and then author a standard dvd using your mac software.

I do not have a Panasonic dvd-recorder but with both of my recorders you can set the recording mode for -RW disks.

Many players can't read -RW discs. Panasonic can, but the disc has to be formatted/reformatted/finalized in the Panasonic if you want to use for recording there. If you have an -RW disc that you've erased earlier on your PC drive or another DVD player, Panasonic will likely insist that you reformat it in their machine (that is, if the Panny doesn't just reject it, period). AFAIK the HDD units don't have an "-RW record" mode. The VIDEO_RM folder results from Panasonic's own recording mode and requires software that can navigate Panasonic's VR recordings (try TMPGenc's editors). I know that Panny uses VR mode on DVD-RAM, but I haven't use RW for a long time and just don't remember. You will often see VR recordings in 6-hour or long-play modes (which look like crap anyway, especially the way Panasonic does it).
