  1. I installed KM Player, then decided I didn't want it, so I uninstalled it and also deleted a small residual KM Player folder in the Program files, but KM Player still shows up in the video type (see screenshot). My question is: how can I get rid of that KM Player residual? I like that the type says "avi", but I don't want the KM Player designation.

I already did that. I have Media Player Classic Home Cinema as the default player and when I click on the file, it opens no problem in MPC-HC.
I hate to install some other software to get rid of the residual KM Player. Might there be some place I can find the residual KM Player and delete it myself?

You'll have to edit the Registry manually (w/ regedit.exe).

Can you give me some directions on how to do that?
I did a search in regedit for "km player" and only found (see screenshot).

You'll have to find (and delete) the entries that contain the string "kmplayer" --- not "km player".

  8. There seem to be a huge number of entries. I took screenshots of just some of them. How many entries (to KMPlayer) roughly do you think are in the registry? How can I root them all out and delete them? I am generally unfamiliar with the registry, so I need detailed instructions. How do I delete an entry? For example, the first screenshot, you see "KMPlayer.mpeg" Do I just put the mouse on that, right click to delete? Beware, KM Player is definitely malware because it leaves an obvious trail, even after you supposedly uninstall it.

Revo Uninstaller Pro does it automatically, but you prefer the hard way. If you foock up the registry you f**k up the registry. no way back.

  10. I tried Revo Uninstaller Pro, but it does not detect the former KM Player installation, nor does Revo Uninstaller Pro in any of the modes deal (in this case) with the leftover KM Player in the registry.
I hoping El Heggunte, or someone else with xp registry experience can jump in and answer above
    posting #8.

The problematic entries are inside their parent "keys" (represented by folder icons in Regedit).
Delete those parent keys, case solved.

I had to do that years ago, but it was because of a different crapware, namely Svplayer
    (a poor-man clone of MPC-HC).

  12. All you have to do is associate the extension with another player.

  13. El Heggunte,
I really appreciate your help. I want to make sure I understand clearly your last reply, least I do damage to the registry. Do you mean I should delete all the yellow folders (the open folders circled in red and numbered 1-8?) These 8 screenshots came from doing a "find next" on KMPlayer.
See screenshot. Also, on the last screenshot, you can see I circled the scroll bar in blue, indicating that there are many more yellow folders that will have a KMPlayer reference (probably about 40 folders) Should I delete all those folders?
EDIT: I went to the following website
    http://www.file-extensions.org/kmplayer-file-extensions
that lists 50 some file extensions that supposedly work with KM Player. As an experiment, I opened up a New Text Document and one by one changed the extension to each of the 50 some extensions. However, only the following extensions would show "Type:KMplayer.xxx"
    kpl,ksf,3gp,avi,mpg,srt,vob,wmv,ass,mpeg,ogm,smi,m kv,mp4,mov,flv,dat,asf
See last 2 screenshots for example. All the other extensions did not show KM Player.

No restore points available that predate the installation?
Doesn't XP make them every 24 hours?

@ jimdagys: if you want to be on the "100% safe side", instead of deleting anything,
just *rename* the annoying strings ---

--- example: rename "KMplayer.avi" to "AVI File", KMplayer.MKV" to "MKV File", and so on.
Important: maybe you'll have to reboot the computer, in order to ensure the changes were applied.

BTW, I am not aware of any method/program for doing batch-renamings or batch-deletions in the Registry database.
Therefore, at least this time you have no excuse for being too lazy.

Revo Uninstaller Pro does it. You right click on any file or folder related to the program and select uninstall with revo. At the end you get the hole tree with registry entries of the program. I just select all and delete. Revo also makes a restore point before uninstalling.

If you cannot find any file do a search for any file with the name of the program then hit it with Revo.

Note: I do not work for Revo nor I sell the product. I'm only a satisfied user.

  17. PROBLEM SOLVED
I had heard of the term "system restore", but I didn't really know what it was. I found a very simple article at:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

and restored my system to last Thursday. ( I couldn't clearly remember when I installed the malware KMPlayer, but I was pretty sure it was after last Thursday. At any rate, after doing system restore, I searched the registry for KMPlayer, and nothing was found. Also, as expected, there are no more references to KMPlayer when I add the extensions (that previously said KM Player) (See screenshot). Thanks to sambat for this success.
I still am curious about manually deleting folders in the registry. I've got to find someone else's computer and with their permission, reinfect with the malware KM Player, uninstall KMPlayer, then see about deleting the offending registry folders.

I also need to experiment with Revo Uninstaller Pro. I was unaware of the above features.
EDIT: I can see that just deleting yellow folders in the registry wouldn't have worked. (See screenshot showing before and after system restore.) Both screenshots have the .3gp folder, but the contents is different.
