M/Soft is already working on a major update for Windows 8 that may be more than an update in the traditional sense. Read here:
    http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-blue-th...indows-8-update

    Notice this:
The Verge today reports that Blue is a little bit more than that – not just an OS update, but a move towards a standardised annual update cycle across both Windows and Windows Phone.
    ..And this:
expected to arrive in mid-2013, will include "UI changes and alterations to the entire platform and pricing."

    ..And this:
Blue update is also expected to pave the way for a cycle of annual OS updates.

Are we seeing the introduction of a "pay for" subscription for M/Soft's operating system now which will include cell phones that uses Windows 8 interface? And note they plan to accept ONLY apps that use this subscription format from any future developers. So...in effect... only developers that use W/Blue and pay M/Soft will be able to create any 3rd party applications.

yes, they want to get rid of (stop) developers, (like me and other hackers)
whatever they can do to control the video and music content for good. just stop the free ability to develop windows apps. buy giving us simple freebies (i.e., $40 updates) and get us use (and hooked) to their new product we will see a bigger change of control and no more freeware anything. windows 8 and x scares me. that's just my opinion.

Here are a couple of decent articles on the subject of windows 8:

    http://www.economist.com/news/business/21565225-microsoft-makes-its-pitch-mobile-age-tablets-high

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/2017470/windows-blue-how-it-could-reinvent-windows-or-s...windows-8.html

Microsoft is becoming Apple. Not that I blame them.

I can't believe how many Apple users still think that Apple is Luke Skywalker and Microsoft is Darth Vader. They're all Darth Vader, or would be if they had the chance.

This is one of the reasons I'm using linux now. Happily. I still have a small win7 partition but microsoft could probably sue me for neglect of it.

Linux is looking better to me the more time passes. I am just weary of re-re-re-re-learning operating systems.

but linux scares me too, its too "scripty" for me. i mean, everything is all scripts. and the scripts are not very user englishable friendly for me. plus, there are too many flavors of it. ubunto, linux, redhat, and so on. all too confusing to me. ... . ..

Yeah, me to. I get tired of just thinking about trying to make Linux run with the different programs I have. I will stick with Windows 7 for the next few years, by then I am sure that all computers will be the size of postage stamps and you will pop a sensor on your head and see the "screen" directly with your brain and give commands that way.

That's just not true. One of the most technically illiterate people I know uses ubuntu. She loves it. Finds it much easier than windows. And she's absolutely clueless about computers.

And she's never had a virus since.

That I can see. For non geeks ubuntu and mint are probably best.

Then just try one until you find one you like. Plenty of them use nice GUI's.

I used Fedora 16 on 2 of my PC's. Will probably use Fedora 17 on at least one of them in the near future. It also helps that I use Red Hat Linux at work(Fedora is the free at home version of Red Hat Linux).

I'll probably stick with Windows XP when I want to use Windows.

XP is a damn good OS, I have had far less problems with it than W7 Ultimate.
