AMD to sell it's Austin Texas campus

In any business, it needs cash to run. It won't run by itself. Need to pay staff every week.
In desperate times, selling asset to fund operating cost is the only option. When share price is less $2, raising fund is not cheap.
By selling other business and just focus on PC is a wrong strategy. AMD never gain more than 20% of the PC market share.
Hiring people to focus on other business now it's a bit late. ARMS holding took many years to establish itself in the mobile processor business.

One thing for sure, Jerry Sanders won't be happy seeing AMD is such bad shape. Worry not, someone else will make the AMD cpu if ever AMD goes belly up.

making existing chips isn't the problem, it's designing better new chips that has been behind the curve for amd. cheap power hungry cpu designs didn't get them anything but a few miserly home builders.

Yeah, and as soon as AMD procs disappear off retail/online store shelves, watch what happens to Intel's CPU prices. They are rubbing their hands together. Too bad.

i really don't think if AMD goes under that intel will raise the prices of their cpu's because they have a much bigger competitor than AMD, themselves.

as it stands now there is only one real way to convince an SB/IB owner to shell out hundreds of dollars upgrading to haswell; haswell needs to significantly out-perform SB/IB cpu's and the cost needs to stay constant.

if haswell isn't a good 50% faster AND in the same price range then not to many people will spend the cash buying a new cpu and a new motherboard.

intel is really a victim of it's own success, ivy bridge based cpu's are really fast and they are power efficient, they have really long legs and even sandy bridges are a damn good value, you can overclock a 2500k to well past 4ghz without much trouble and a 2500k is plenty fast for most tasks.

i'm not too concerned with intel price gouging, i'm more concerned with the impact on the economy as a whole if a company like AMD buys the farm.

The update CPU glory days are way behind us for most of the general population. Fewer and fewer users are being afftected by the latest and greatest processor that the industry can put out. That translates to a lower demand. So if you don't need the speed, you won't buy it. If you need it, you'll pay whatever it costs.
