    I'd read that supposedly OTA converter boxes output 480i period. According to the info on an HDTV I hooked up to a converter box, depending on the channel, it shows an image of 480i, 720p and 1080i.

    Only the "coupon eligible" DTV converter boxes were limited to 480i and composite output. There are plenty of ATSC tuners that feature HD output.
