Hi, I recently got into ripping and encoding. Encoding is okay right now, but I'm having some difficulty ripping a dvd to a lossless codecs(e.g Lagarith, HuffYuv).
I am on windows 8, 64 bits.
I tried some free software, most of them doesn't support lagarith or HuffYuv. Does anybody here know a good lossless ripping software?
thx, I hope I can get some answer quick!
EDIT: I don't really care about the file size

Rip using DVDFab HD Decrypter or AnyDVD (to do the ripping process only), then use the converter of your choice to re-encode the video(s). There are no all-in-ones that handle both ripping and re-encoding (both steps together) well, to my knowledge.

I don't know of any decrypter that allows you to decrypt to a lossless AVI. The function of a decrypter (ripper) is to remove the copy protection, and nothing else. Ordinarily you'd decrypt first, and then do whatever you wanted to do with it afterwards. In addition, I see no need for such a thing anyway. If you're going to be filtering it in stages, you can begin to use your lossless codec then.

ripping to mpeg-2 is lossless. it's what's on the dvd.

Then what the hell was the point of wanting to convert to Huffy, etc. in the first place?
I am completely baffled by your original desire and your follow up above as they seem to be in conflict with each other (if ripping to VOB is good enough then why post?) so unless you have further issues and you'd care explain what you are trying to accomplish is, I think we're all done here. -
aedipuss said it was lossless, Is it?
EDIT: Oh I get it, I should mention that Im doing it in stage, Lossless and then re-encode for a smaller file and a good quality(x264)
and sorry for if I forget to add more precision, aswell as my english may not be really goodLast edited by TheNiceGuy; 23rd Nov 2012 at 18:11.

A 'rip' is simply to transer the contents of the dvd to your hdd and, as stated, remove any copy protection. The content of a dvd is mpeg2. In strictness this is a 'lossy' format and more editing and writing back to mpeg2 will lose you more detail.
You CANNOT 'rip' to any lossless - in the strictest sense - format. However what aedipuss is saying is that the mere tranfer of the content from the dvd disk to the hdd does not comprimise the quality already on the disk so what you have is a lossless copy of that.
The issue is that many people regard a rip as a conversion from mpeg2 to ,say, Divx. That is not a rip that is a re-encode. -
You doubt aedipuss's word? Yes, it's lossless. All decrypting/ripping does is remove the copy protection. Except for that, the VOBs are just as on the DVD.

The ripping PROCESS is lossless. With very few exceptions, the conversion process is lossy.
Ripping-only allows you to losslessly retain a clone of the original (same "generation"). Since the original in a dvd is Mpeg2, the files are still lossy, but at least they're not another lossy generation down. So in a sense, you are both right (and both wrong/incomplete).
As monono said, there are ways to bypass the intermediate generation so your final conversion is only 1 generation down.
