    Hey all,

Just quickly, what is the difference between MPEG-1 and 2?

I know a general SVCD template has a higher bitrate and resolution than a VCD template (eg. in TMPGEnc) but what if I was to chose an MPEG-1 but then use the SVCD standard bitrate and resolution (say 2496 and 480X576)?
Would I end up with essentially an SVCD or would it be different?

    Cheers

  2. what you'd have is an xVCD. VCD and SVCD are standards. if you use the SVCD template but replace the stream with MPEG-1, then that changes the Specs so it becomes an XVCD (if it uses an MPEG-1 stream its VCD, if it uses MPEG-2 then its SVCD, anything done to the resolution, bitrate, frequency, fps etc then makes it and eXtended VCD (MPEG1) or eXtended SVCD (MPEG2) (eXtended=X hence XVCD, XSVCD). if that's confusing i'm sorry, it took a little while for me to understand as well.

  3. Also, MPEG-2 simply looks a whole lot better than MPEG-1, in my experience.

I'm sure there's data to back it up somewhere, but I can't quote you anything. As I understand it, MPEG-2 is basically DVD compression, whereas MPEG-1 is an older standard.

Personally, I can't wait until I can buy a set-top player that handles DVD, MP3, SVCD, VCD *and* DIVX, and isn't basically a TV-top PC.

  4. Grab a big beverage, put your feet up, sit back, and read this excellent MPEG article at UC-Berzerkly:

As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  5. MPEG-1: better with <480x480 <1500 kbits/sec

    MPEG-2: better with >480x480 >1500 kbits/sec

MPEG-1 is limited in resolution and bitrate. Above (+-) these specs MPEG-1 donīt give better quality

MPEG-2 is VERY good above 2000-3000 Kbits/sec and high resolutions.

MPEG-2 can also have interlaced frames, better VBR, more usable
