I have a Panasonic HD camcorder (AG-130A) that is tapeless. It can record SD DV AVI files, or HD AVCHD files.
For work, I shoot SD DV AVI files. When I copy those files to my Win 7 64 bit PC, WMP and VLC both open and play the files, but both stop at 4mins and 26 secs into the videos. This is for ALL VIDEOS shot with this camera, so it's not a problem specific to one file.
Also, I tried playing these files on my laptop (also a Win 7 64 bit), and they stop in the exact same place.
I have another PC running Win XP, and that system plays the files just fine. So this must be specific to Win 7.
If it were a codec issue, I would expect the files to not play at all.
What am I looking for?

I have DV AVI files over 4 minutes and 26 seconds and they play fine in Windows 7, 64 bit. With WMP, MPCHC, VLC etc. 4:26 is very close to the 1 GB mark. Some systems used to have problems there. How are the files getting from your camcorder to your computer? Maybe they are using the AVI 1.0 spec, not ODML? Try opening them in VirtualDub. See if it can get beyond the problematic time. If so, set Video -> Direct Stream Copy and save as a new file. See if that new file works.

how are the memory cards formatted? fat, fat32, exfat, ntsc, etc. maybe your computer can't handle the format type.

ntfs, it was the end of a long day.
it's close to dvavi but little things like the total bitrate are off. "real" dvavi has no problem playing any time/size on win7. i'd check all the settings on the cam to see if somethings amiss there.--

Not yet, I will.
But I need to fix the issue in my camera or pc, because this will be an ongoing issue.I don't have a bad attitude...

Try installing GraphStudio. Select File -> Render Media File... to build a graph for one of your problematic DV AVI files. What filters are being used? In mine I see:
You can right click an any of the filters (boxes) and select Properties. In the above graph Capture2.AVI is Windows 7's built in AVI reader (quartz.dll), AVI Splitter is Windows' built in AVI Splitter (quartz.dll), DV Video Decoder is Windows' built in DV decoder (qdv.dll). Press the play button. Does it play past the 4:27 mark?
I suspect you may have a different AVI file reader or splitter and the problem is there.
