How do you like your music performed?

I like my music done by the original performers.Once in a while a song sounds better done live such as "I want you to want me"when cheap trick performed that in japan live.Thanks to yoda313 for the poll.

i like the original version. however i do like live a lot too. tbe only prob lem is sometimes live performances are is too "loose" and not true to the studio version.

Usually i don't like covers. however a lot of phil collins' solo hits are covers so that's an exception.

Original versions are of course a performance standard, but depending upon the cover, remix or remake of a song I may like that as much if not more than the originals. Sometimes if for no other reason than I have heard the original too many times and I like to hear it 'freshened up.'

it really depends, there's tons of songs that i can't stand from the original artist but love when they were covered by good singers, johnny cash's song's come to mind, i love rod stewart's covers, etc.

The rule says "the original work/release is the best", but this rule too has nice exceptions.

Two examples --- "Philadelphia Freedom" with Hall & Oates is as good as the version sung by Elton John, and "Fly me To the Moon" by CLAIRE is the only acceptable interpretation for my ears.

well, lots of variables in this poll.

you know..sometimes i will listen to a performance (my particulars are studio or live audiance acoustics) and really like it. then i find out later that it was a remix or cover work. so i go look it up and play it and find i prefer the remix. if i hadn't heard it before, then it doesn't really matter who originated it because to me that first one, the first time i hear it, is the one i prefer. but one thing i love in a live performance is movement. for instance, dave matthews band. i know, i know.. some of you don't like his music. i didn't either, until i heard *and seen* one of his live performances on dvd some years ago.

i do like some remakes when they are performed acoustically. see examples below.

music videos (MTV) aren't the same. but once upon a time, MTV'ago, (back in the early 80's) mvideos were awsome. my first mtv video experience was Meatloaf. what's that long long version, "gonna sleep on it, baby baby, gonna sleep on it.." i think was the words. i saw that back in 1984 on mtv (in stereo and nice speaker system) while tempoaraily sharing an apt till i got on my feet. seeing that was like being there in concert. by the way, i've never been to a live concert. aiws. it was my very first live performance that stuck with me to this day. and then seeing dave matthews (i forget the performance though) ignited me and i've been ever since changed a second time.

the alternate is where you hear it on cd, long forgoten in the past or recent. then, your visiting some music store (browsing around) and happen to capture a live performance of the same title. i find that once i *see* them perform, there is no contest, live performance is my prefered route. however, i've seen some live concerts (madonna, for instance) and i find i prefer some of her old (80's) music on cd instead. i don't know, somehow, it sounds like they are out of breath singing those oldies.

there is also some new Covers or variation of acoustic live performance, from young noboday artists floating around on youtube. lots of live (acoustic) performances, in backyards or other odd places. some of these artists have an array of performances. so, i'm always looking around for these.

there are some good remakes (maybe not the same as remix) floating on youtube. actaully nice ones.

It depends, so I didn't vote.

The Beatles Second Album, for instance, has several R&B covers like Long Tall Sally, Please Mister Postman, etc. They're rather good, though I can't say better than the originals.

Then there's Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison. Van Halen's version is also quite good.

One could go on and on with lots of examples. Some "better", some "worse", some merely different, so it really just depends. I guess I'm not a purist who thinks that only songs done by the original artists are worthy of notice.

I didn't vote either. It depends. There aren't any hard and fast rules.

I don't have any problems with covers. Whatsoever. How can anybody criticize Hendrix's version of All Along The Watchtower because it's a cover? That's just ridiculous.

In fact I'd go so far as to say that the fact that you can't spend a few years playing covers in clubs anymore is a big factor in the general lack of chops nowadays.
