Your Blu Ray discs are probably not zone coded(region coded), but your DVD discs ARE region coded.
99% chance you will NOT find a hack for that player.

Easy way to tell: rip/decrypt an NTSC dvd to ISO and then burn it. Since most decrypters automatically remove region coding, uops, etc, you will now be able to see if it is a region coding problem (with easy fix of just repeating the rip-reburn process) or is an NTSC problem. That you probably couldn't fix even with an "unlocked" player.

Note: DVDs really only support 2 systems (NTSC 29.97 and PAL 25, with film using the pulldown trick on NTSC) . BDs truly support 3 systems: Film is specifically included on its own, as 24 or 23.976. This is probably the reason you notice a difference in compatibility.

Btw, @hech54, there plenty of BDs that are region coded.

I'm just going by what I've heard from many people here have said...many BDs are not zone/region coded.

It depends on what you buy.

Disney almost always region locks their BD discs. They remain somewhat infamous for staggered release dates as a result. It's been known for some movies to come on BluRay up to a full year later in some BluRay regions than others, so region locking is a big deal for them. Sony is also known to region lock some releases.

Some Hollywood studios don't care so much. I have the impression that Universal doesn't care all that much about region locking.

Some of the smaller Hollywood studios region lock everything they put out. Speciality production houses like Criterion are required by their contracts to region lock either every disc they put out or close to it. They are basically only licensed for North America for their releases. The British Film Institute has similar restrictions, but for Europe.

Many foreign films don't get region locked at all. It's very unusual for a Hong Kong movie to be region locked, for example.

At least the BD regions make sense (in my opinion) and they're not as stupid as the DVD region sceme was.
