    Welcome to the forum.

A little tip. NEVER head a topic with the words 'help with something'. People search the forums for help and to include the word 'help' with no indication of the help you need will be of no help. 'Cannot capture at 720*480 with dazzle dvc 100' would have been much more useful and could generate more replies than this one.

The 'jump' you are experiencing is probably due to the hard drive on your laptop which is also trying to do other things at the same time. Your GF's laptop may have a faster drive or even better processor.

What are you capturing from. You sure are not capturing direct from the tv. I guess there is just a coincidence there.

The hard drive could well be fine. 720*480 requires significantly more information to be captured that 640*480. Your hard drive needs to work more. Your CPU needs to work more. You only have one drive in the laptop and the OS will also be trying to read/write to that at the same time. I also assume that your GF's laptop is NOT the same model as yours.

    Here's your answer:
i can record at 640x480 fine just cant do the 720x480
Dude, you don't have a fast enough computer. If I try to count the number of posters that are moaning because they can't capture quality using their laptops I would run out of numbers. Capturing is one of the most demanding things you can ask a computer to do. The laptop concept is portability, not performance and that has never changed.
    2.00 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache
    Hard disk drive speed 5400RPM
You are way underpowered. It's great for running a word processing program and e-mail, but forget serious video editing and capturing.

Before we see his specs, and just as a reference using my laptop, I can easily capture MPEG2 720x576 @ 9000kbps, HDD 120GB 5400rpm, dual core, 1.83GHz processor.

  12. In VirtualDub turn off the audio playback while capturing. Disable the audio/video re-sync options. Don't use any compression on the audio, save as uncompressed PCM. Use a fast video codec like HuffYUV. In addition to that check all the things in this guide:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/104098-Why-does-your-system-drop-frames

Once you have the computer capturing without dropped frames you can look at re-enabling some of the other options.

Brian...in your own words to DB83 above:
lol damn dude u getting mad over nothing, anyways peace out then
Yes, you are underpowered. With tweaking you may get your unit to capture, but I also said in my post that any serious video editing won't work on your unit.

Check all important settings for capture:

    PAL /NTSC
    frames per second
    resolution

You will find them inside the device driver settings AND the capture program. The capture resolution must match your destination requirements.

    A destination profile (see below)

A good capture software gives you some sort of destination selection, that limits the available resolution settings, i.e.
VCD (Video CD), SVCD, DVD and so on.
Valid DVD resolution are 702(720)x480 for NTSC or 702(720)x576 for PAL. Your Display you use for controlling the capture application must have equal or (better) higher resolution setting, because the preview window and the player needs that available space on the screen.

The TV does not support all resolutions, that the notebook GPU supports, but DVD resolution is always supported. Check the display settings on your NB if there is a special TV Display setting available.
Check the functionality with a software DVD Player (Power DVD or equal) and a good original DVD. The DVD playback from the Notebook on the TV must look equal to a attached standalone DVD Player. If not, something is wrong with the setup.
