  1. I have been searching around and just cannot seem to find all the posts needed.

I am converting my DVDs to digital copies and am looking to store them ona Western Digital My Book Live for streaming on demand to my Samsung Bluray player, Xbox 360, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Ipad 2 and 3 pc's (Win7) as needed.

I am looking for help as to what format to make the movies and if there is any other software I need to download to make it work with all the above devices.

Also, a side note that my extended Google-fu could not find. When I "download" a digital copy of a movie online/via xbox apps/google store, I want access to the file so I can move it to the MyBookLive. I do not want "cloud" storage which is where all the places i can "buy" the movies seem to keep the movie for you as needed. That is not ownership, its permanent rental on demand. I get why they do it, but i am looking for a service where I actually get the downloaded file. Any ideas?

Can anyone help or link me to the forum post here?

    thanks!

You could try convert to mp4/m4v with handbrake using the ipad profile. Test it on all devices.

Rip with dvdfab decrypter or install anydvd.

  3. If your Samsung Bluray player can handle H.264/AAC MP4 files, then that is what I would choose, as everything else on your list should handle that OK.

The only problem I can see is if you want to preserve 5.1 audio, as the Xbox 360 can only handle 2 channel AAC audio.

  4. thank you for the links.

I had no idea the xbox would not keep the 5.1. VERY good to know. If i make the file std 5.1, will the xbox just play the movie in 2channel or will it not do sound at all?

The only 5.1 audio formats the Xbox will accept via streaming are AC3 in AVI (xvid/divx) or Windows Media Pro in WMV. If you try to play any other 5.1 formats (5.1 AC3 in MP4 for example) the Xbox will simply refuse.
