  1. I have windows xp and even though I have unticked the alert settings (see screenshot), after a week or so, they are ticked again, and I get the annoying balloon again. Why does this happen and how can I keep it from happening?

  2. I'm not sure you can "permanently" disable these particular balloon notifications (Windows XP does occasionally undo your choices - I find System Restore turned on after turning it off), but you can disable all balloon notifications completely using TweakUI. Although this might not be so good if you want some notifications to show

    Download it here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm

In my view, only windows automatic update should be turned off.
If you have another firewall, ok to turn off windows firewall. The setting for antivirus should not be turned off in my view.
I have XP, and I have disabled only windows automatic updates, as I have had bad experience with those sometimes.
XP has never changed my settings.

You can configure the Security Center settings in Control panel to ignore certain conditions. Look at the image of the message you posted in post #1. On the left-hand side you'll see a menu item, "Change the way Security Center alerts me".

If you are running a different firewall (such as Comodo, Zone Alarm, etc.) and disable XP's firewall, usually the nag will stop. However, if for some reason you are still getting the "nag bubble", then try this:To Stop XPs Firewall nag (sometimes I have found this also stops the "automatic updates" nag, but not always):
    Boot into Safe Mode:
    Windows/System32/wscntfy.exe
    Delete wscntfy.exe
Reboot into XP, nag will be gone.

To Stop XPs "Updates Disabled" nag screen
    :
    enter the registry
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Security Center
    DWORD = UpdatesDisableNotify
    Set Value to 1
IF you don't find the above DWORD, then just create it: EDIT\New\Dword Value
A Windows restart is needed to change this setting.
