I think this would be more appropriate for movie discussion than the poll thread.

I saw it last night and liked it. It wasn't fabulous but it was very good. I think the smaller scope of the whole story arc kind of limited the global nature of a lot of bond movies. I don't think it would be a spoiler to mention that there isn't a true global threat or some super terrorist plot. There is bad stuff that shouldn't happen obviously but the often large scale of a lot of other Bond movies wasn't quite there.

With that said it was a good bond movie to be sure. I thought they weren't going to be showing the gun barrel logo at all in the movie but they did show it at the end just before the credits which was a bit unusual to be sure.

I don't know that I'll go see it again while its at the theaters. I got my ticket free with the movie cash ticket that was on the Goldfinger Bluray I just bought the other day for this purpose. I suppose if I want to go again while the deal is good I could buy another 007 Bluray and go for free again.

Oh and I saw it in an AMC theater that has the Sony 4k screen. Very nice. I haven't checked out imdb so I don't know if Skyfall was shot digitally or not. Was it? It looked great on the screen.

So anyone else seen it yet?

Try to keep it spoiler free at least for this opening weekend. I'm sure anybody can find out what they want to online but lets keep it off here for right now. PMs would work for plot specific discussion.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

  2. Did the company that made the Blu Ray of Goldfinger do a good job on the disc? I mean were the picture and sound much better than the DVDs?

I am happy that "Skyfall" was enjoyable to you. I was hoping it was an enjoyable movie. I do like the Bond movies, but I didn't like movie directly preceding this one.

  3. I would say that 'Skyfall' is one of the better Bond movies. Lots of good effects. Some great views of Macau and Shanghai. Of course there are some implausible things that happen, especially in the first few minutes, but overall a great movie with some really intense moments. This one was "filmed" with digital cameras throughout.

Here's the story on the cameras: http://www.hitfix.com/in-contention/tech-support-interview-roger-deakins-on-skyfall-go...t-looking-back

  4. I hope the scenes were well lit. I enjoy it much more if I can see who's kicking who's butt. I also hope the dialog is quite clear, no mumbling or sound track that drowns out the words being spoken. Or having to turn the sound up to hear the dialog and then back it down when the music comes up. I like Dame Judi Dench as M. I feel sorry for poor Moneypenny, pining for James and she always come up short. I would love to see Moneypenny get more scenes, and perhaps move on from James. It would serve James right, if he finally decided to take her out on a date, and she said "Not tonight I gottta wash my hair".

  6. Tom - Good thoughts about the lit scenes. Yes they were pretty good. The shanghai sequences appeared to be filmed in the night to show the neon signs and I thought that some of those close up action sequences were a little too dark. Later, some dialog seemed to be drowned out by background noise. But then, I'm somewhat hard of hearing so that may have been my problem.

Whoops, just read this (from my link above): "regarding that Shanghai sequence -- which was as much a feat of art direction as it was photography, as it was shot on a soundstage and not on location -"

    Sure had me fooled.

Well its available for hd streaming in the US already. Its on bluray/dvd next Tuesday.

Strange that the UK release is actually later than the US. Why is that?

I don't know if I'll pick it up on Tuesday but probably will next weekend.

It actually seems faster than the usual dvd release but I didn't realize this was out in October. It seemed later in the year than that.

Depends on which dvd - they also put out a remastered dvd of each of the movies. I have goldfinger on bluray and it looks very good of course. However I also have a few of the remastered dvds that look good on their own. I do have a few of the first bond dvds of the "special edition" versions that weren't really outstanding. They were better than vhs of course but not enhanced or retouched at all. Not bad but not eyepopping in terms of visual quality - as much as sd allows for of course.

Thoughts? Dull. Disappointing. Even worse than the last one.

I actually think Craig's the best Bond actor ever, but the movies have been going downhill fast.

I'm waiting for the Bluray to come out. Funny story, Quantum of Solace was actually one of the first Blurays I watched and I was blown away by the A/V quality. The first scene where Craig wrecks an Aston Martin is amazing.

    Yep not bad.

My first bluray was either Final Fantasy Spirits within or the Kurt Russell Stargate movie, can't remember for sure.

The ones that really stun me are the Transformers movies - say what you will about the movies themselves but the sheer sheen on the robots is incredible. Not to mention the JJ Abrhams Star Trek movie on bluray - visually stunning on hd.
