i hope this is the right sub-forum to put this in...

I'm starting to put out videos showing the difference in audio between multiple releases of the same album.
    here's a test vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXjlpCSLEqk

I'm using windows movie maker live which is fantastic. Except for one thing. The highest kbps of output audio is 440. Which I know is a little higher than a 320 mp3, but I'm wondering if there is a video editor that lets you create a video with lossless audio (1411 kbps) or at least something greater than 440 ?? Since comparing the quality of audio is main objective of my videos, I'm hoping to find something higher.

    thanks

Are you sure you didn't mean FARTastic?

Don't want to rain on your parade, but most people around here only use WMM for the simplest, quick-and-dirty jobs, because it is well known for having glitches, few output options, and few productivity & creativity tools. Of course, if it works for your needs then don't worry about it.

As mentioned before, any self-respecting NLE will use & can output uncompressed audio (in addition to other options). WMM is no different, except, being a "video editor", it won't give you audio alone, just audio with video. So you could output DV-AVI (one of WMM's options) which uses LPCM audio. With WMM, since it loves to use WMV/WMA codecs & containers, you could choose WMA-Lossless as the audio codec. You'd have to manually set it, as it's probably not listed as a preset. WMA-Lossless is just like its name says - "lossless".

After outputting a Video+Audio from WMM, to get an unadorned Audio-only stream, you'd have to Demux it somehow (Virtualdub, WM Stream Editor, AVIDemux, AVIMux-GUI, etc).

edit: yeah, I'm not sure what differences there are between WMM and WMM "live"...

ahhah, I can see that it is not popular around here. But I rarely make videos, and if I do, they are pretty simple in nature. I'm more of a stickler when it comes to audio. One thing I really like about WMM live is I could put the 3 separate audio files right at the point in time where I wanted them to start in the video down to the exact frame. I know little about video editing and I'm not sure if this is a basic function of most video editors, but I was impressed at how dummy-proof it was.

I'm going to go back and check the options again on Live to see if I didn't miss anything. It did seem unusual to me too that there was no lossless option. But then again, I checked out AVS and the highest kbps I saw was 320. I was starting to think that was standard.

If I can't find it on Live, I'll try just WMM. If this doesn't work out, any personal recommendations on free video editors that can accomplish what I'm after?
