On a whim today, I decided to try the TMPGEnc MPEG Smart Renderer software (currently known as TMPGEnc MPEG Editor 3). I was very surprised to find that scrubbing the video at any speed other than normal playback resulted in a very macro-blocky mess. Is there a setting that I have misconfigured or is this normal behavior? If so I am surprised. Both VideoReDo & MPEG Video Wizard have very clean playback at all speeds. Please let me know your experiences with this. Thanks.

TMPGenc Editor is an editor. Other than applying a few special effects like dissolves, cutting and joining is its major task. The problem depends on what you're trying to do and what you used for input. Without more info, there's not much anyone could say. Last edited by sanlyn; 23rd Mar 2014 at 14:00.

I tried both a dvd ifo for input (selecting the main title for the video) and previously edited MPEG 2 videos (source again was a commercial NTSC dvd). Nothing exotic tried at all. Again, I was just surprised that the FF and FR both caused the video display to be terrible (just macroblocking).

Nevermind. I figured out that it was the default configuration of my Shuttle Pro. Apparently if you use <Ctrl>+2, <Ctrl>+3 ... it causes the macro-blocking. using straight keyboard shortcuts doesn't seem to cause it. Sorry for the false alarm.
