  1. As the name suggests, avidemux is, I imagine, primarily intended for avi files. I have some avi's I want to crop but there doesn't seem to be a way of saving the new file as avi. In the 'Video Output' section you obviously can't choose 'copy' and avi is not one of the choices. I've been saving my cropped files as MP4 AVC x264.

Can a cropped avi be saved as avi? (I'm using version 2.6).

    Thank you.

Choose AVI muxer under Output format?

And I would use mpeg4 xvid for avi.

That's because when you crop you need to re-encode.

  5. Many thanks, Baldrick. That worked fine and the end result seems, to my eye, a tad sharper than the mp4's I had already done. You're a star.

Hech54 – yep, I know a re-encode is required but there shouldn't be a bar to re-encoding with the same file extension. I could have done it quite easily with, say, xmediarecode but I wanted to use avidemux.
