Hello
I tried loading an AVI file in virtualdub and got the message "Couldnt locate Decompressor 'FMP4' (unknown)". There seems to be suggestion that ffdshow will fix the problem. I downloaded ffdshow and now when i load the file everything seems normal with no message recieved. The problem i have now is that after i have finished doing what im doing - in this case adding SSA subtitles - the finished file is in black and white, distorted and the pictures slanted. The subtitles are the only thing that appear normal. Does anyone know what this is and have any suggestions on a possbile fix?

FMP4 is FFmpeg's internal mpeg4 encoder, which is practically the same as Divx and Xvid (though not as good).
You could try changing the FourCC code using FourCC Changer to XVID. This will make software such as Virtualdub think it is an Xvid file. -
Thnaks for your suggestion. I downloaded the Four CC Changer as suggested. First question i have is there are two fields that need populating - the FourCC Description code which has a choice of MP41, MP42, MP43 and DIV4 and the FourCC Used Codec field which gives a choice of MP41, MP42, MP43 and DIV3. So i was unsure what to populate with so went DIV4 and DIV3. The first thing i found strange was the entire subtitle embedding process in virtualdub took only 12 minutes when its usually around the 40min mark. The finished product i got this time when i played it in VLC was a complete black screen. The audio is present as are the subtitles but no picture.

I dont really know what those frame sizes mean but if what youre suggesting was to open the resize option within virtual dub and change to an option of mutliple of 4, 8 or 16 in the codec -friendly sizing field, well that didnt work. So im still having the same problem.

Yes, I meant to resize, add borders, or crop to an integer multiple of 4, 8, or 16. What was the frame size of your source? What was the frame size of the video you made? Did the source video look normal in both panes in VirtualDub? The video you made?
Another thing to look at: Video -> Color Depth. Try setting the output format to RGB24, RGB32, or YV12.
