If you burn your VCD with Nero or VCDEasy it will automatically burn in Mode 2. Some programs will only burn in Mode 1 like Ulead DVD Factory. It is save to make your MPEG 800MB instead 700MB and it will still fit but allow a few megs for the extra files if you can't overburn. If you use the TMPGEnc wizard and set the file so that it will use 100% of the CD the file should come out to about 785MB or and you will have lots of extra space. The ISO setting refer to how the CDs name will show in the hardware you use to play it back. The different type of ISO will display the name differently like ACSII will allow to use spaces and lower cased letters whereas the others only use caps and underscores. Sometimes if you change the ISO settings the hardware you use may not recognize the CD you created.

Can you detail step by step procedure for sucessfully burning a 800 MB file to VCD using Nero, including the required version of Nero that you say you have updated to. I believe I have the latest. 5.5.8.2 Every time I try, Nero informs me that the Media capacity is 700 MB and fails. I am also using XP and therefore not able to use VCDEasy.
Many ThanksAl p -
I am using version 5.5.7.2 right now but I have tried that version isn't it the express where you have a wizard. I think I only used that version briefly because it wouldn't make menus even though it was supposed to autmatically. This version doesn't give you as many options as the older ones. In the version I use and version before 5.5.8.2 you could select what mode you wanted but only if you were burning a CD-ROM(ISO) Compilation. For VCD you select Video-CD as the Compilation. If you click the ISO tab this is where you can choose the capacity for you CD. There are the 2 options Mode 1 which give 700MB or Mode 2 which gives 800MB. In my verison Mode 2 is selected and the entire option is grayed out so I don't have a choice on which mode to burn. It's been a while since I used XP but I don't remember having any problems burning VCDs with Nero but I did with VCDEasy because there was no ASPI layer.

Hey.
I followed the guide step by step, got as far as the selecting Video File and Audio File in TMPGEnc and I encountered a problem. I selected the Video File fine, but when it came to selecting the Audio File, there didn't seem to be one. I used cladDVD XP as in the guide and have no idea why i have no .wav file there.
EDIT: I've also just tried ripping the DVD to my Hard Drive and trying to get the .wav wiv DVD2AVI but there is no sound in the .wav which is created.
Anyone help me please?

If you use DVD2AVI double check this setting: Audio--Output Method--Decode to WAV. If it is then it will save the audio track in the right format. Next make sure the VOB files are loaded. Select Options and Preview. The Statistics/Information window should automatically show up. While the movie is playing you should see something like DD 2/3 384 under the Audio section if an audio track is present on that channel. Keep an mind evey DVD is different so the audio may display DTS or a different number. If nothing is displayed then you need to select a different track. While the video is still playing go to the Audio menu and select track number. One track will already be checked off. Probably Track 1 because usually the first track is the main English track. Keep selecting each track until you find the one that will display it's format in the Stats window. A word of caution, most DVD have several audio tracks and different languages so before encoding make sure that you selected the right audio track by playing it back. Before using DVD2AVI again set the track number back to 1 because it save the settings each time.

Hey.
That DD 3/2 384 wasn't showing up before, but I've just gone and updated my ASPI Drivers now it is, so I'm in the process of doing it again.
Thanks a lot.

I got some problem too. I got the film onto CD, but, when played on WinDVD or my stand alone DVD Player, about half way though the film, the sound gets scratchy and the film stops.
I checked the .mpg on my PC and that is fine. What did I do wrong?

I AM TRYING TO BURN A ONE DISK VCD...MY FILE SIZE IS FINE, AND THE FILE I CONVERTED WITH TMPEG LOOKS AND SOUNDS GREAT ON MY HARD DRIVE...HOWEVER WHEN I BURN IT, (HAVE TRIED NERO AND VCD EASY) EVERYTHING IS SPED UP...MY MOVIES ALL SOUND LIKE ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS...I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT THE BURNING SOFTWARE SEES AN HOUR AND 40 MINUTE MOVIE AND TRIES TO COMPENSATE BY SPEEDING IT UP TO MAKE IT PLAY BACK IN 80 MINUTES...ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? ANYONE ELSE EVER ENCOUNTER THIS PROBLEM?...
Update...The VCD actually works fine in my Cyberlink Power DVD program...It does not work on my standalone DVD Player...My standalone is a Samsung DVD-M301...all normally encoded disks work on my player...I am racking my brains out here...any help would be greatly apreciated.THANKS !!!

Hey,
Im following your guide perfectly, but i seem to get a wierd kind of video. While my mpeg is playing (after being encoded), the colours of the video change tints, could this mean that there is something wrong with my TMPGEnc??
Thanx,

does this guide make the movies into widescreen?
edit:im just guessing but you may not have turned off macrovision. -
I followed the directions to the tee. However, I was unable to see picture or sound of the test copy that I made. This sounds real exciting and wish that I had accomplished. Please help me to determine what I did wrong. I was using a source file that I downloaded from WINMX and not a DVD that I ripped. Please help me out.....

Hi, I made a movie (Face off 2h 10m) in one CD, following all the instructions. But when I played in my dvd the movie is in fast motion. And when is in my computer it's perfect.. In order to put the movie in one cd I reduce the bitrate to 650 or around that. Sorry I don't remember very well. Can you help me with that?

This is an excellent manual. Thanks for all the info. I was able to fit the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 movies I have on my hard drive onto one VCD.
My question is this: Can anyone recommend a good DVD player for me to buy to play these VCDs? I have been checking through the DVD players list, and have found many that play VCDs but I want to get one that has been tested with VCDs made with this manual. The lowest I have the video at is 704kbps and on average its at 900kbps in the conversion process. I am just asking b/c I noticed some people not being able to play the movies and lots of people get choppy video and/or audio.
Your suggestions are greatly appreciated as well as this manual as a valuable resource! -
Hi Newgen!
I just wanted to say thanks for the great guide - I couldn't fit the first movie that I tried but I have done three more since then and they have all looked and sounded great! Thanks again!

This guide works!
But...
My Pioneer DV-440 will play 1 VCD movies no problem. But when I try them in my LaSonic (region free DVD player) or AV Baby (VCD/MP3 player) the results are unwatchable. Jerky video, outta sync audio. The problem is the two players that failed need standard VCD only.So I just went back to putting films on 2 VCDs.

It's a very good Guide.
I have made a VCD film of 1h50mn on one CD with a good quality (sound 128Kbps).
It plays very well on my DVD player Philipps DVD710.
Thanks for this Guide.

Since the Last posting, I have passed this along to three of my friends - all of which have decided to go with this method above any other. The movies come out great - between the three of us, we have done over 15 movies - all of which we have not had a problem. So far, the longest movie that we have done is about 2hrs 30mins and we have even added dolby digital trailers to them.
The picture is great and the audio is right on the money. We have Panasonic, Phillips-Magnovox, APEX and RCA Players - and they work fine in all of them! It even plays in my Dreamcast! Thanks so much for putting the guide together and sharing this info with us!!!
I only have one question: how can I get the movie to stay as a widescreen? I changed it to 16:9 (Full Screen - keep Aspect Ration) but sometimes it will change to full screen or look like widescreen with image stretched a bit. Any suggestions?

I burned my first on-disc VCD last night. After used TMPGEnc Encoding, I got 775MB file. However, when I tried to use VCDEasy to burn the disc, it told me I have to check the overburn option, since the total will be 833MB. Where the other 80MB comes from? I am using 80min disc.
BTW, can I do the similar thing with SVCD setting? I think 480x480 will increase the image quality slightly. -
I have followed the tut and am getting pbs when played back on standalone player, brand new though.
I encode with tmpgenc, burn with nero 5.5.8.0.
The mpeg plays fine and I select the vcd with the nero wizard.
That vcd will play fine on my computer but is going funny on my dvd player.
It plays then stops, then plays then stops...
I burnt at 2x, have tried various cd ( r and rw) and still the same.
what kind of info would you need?
thanks. -
Hi Newgen, Wonder if you could help.
I capture my video clip from a SONY camcorder using Ulead media Pro avi format and save it as standard VCD PAL format(mpeg). But the length was too long, about 94mins (filesize ~1.4GB). I decided to use your guideto compress it to go into one VCD. I set every as per your guide, except I remain the bitrate at 1150kps. I managed to convert it to about 794MB mpeg (non standard VCD Pal). I use VCDeasy to burn at 12x and play it on the standalone VCD. The picture was very blocky and shaky.
In short can I convert from a standard VCD Pal to a non standard VCD Pal.
Any advice?
I have seen that a lot of guys out there managed to successfully burn great VCD with your guide.
Thanks in advance.

I have tried a few things and it is still not working as expected.
If I follow the tutotial step by step, it creates a file that fits onto one cd but the playback on standalone player is crap, kind of stuttered.
So I tried various settings, standard vcd in the mpeg settings gives me good playback on the standalone but the file is far too big to fit on one cd.
I tried VBR and CBR at various value but the file is always too big.
LAst night I tried a VBR of 650 and the file was over 900M.
The original one is just 450M.
any ideas? -
I am receiving an error I hope someone can help with. I have the most recent versions of all 3 apps installed. I am able to use Clad and DVD2AVI fine, but I receive the folllowing error about 64% of the way through in TMPG:
'read error occurred at address 10006614 of module 'DVD2AVI.vfp' with 02170E5E.'
I am baffled by this becasue the files are all in thier proper places as far as I can tell. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. -
QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS... Please someone take the time for me??
1. I downloaded CladDVD, but after unzipping it I could not open it. So I used Smartripper and then DVD2AVI. What did I do wrong?
2. At the TMPGEnc stage, I could not enter my audio file to the project wizard section.
3. In another section of TMPGEnc my audio and video files wee present, but after entering all the data you suggested, upon hitting "enter", I got the message "File C:\My documents\My Videos\Pokemon the movie3\AC3T cannot open or is unsupported". This probably relates to question 2, but what went wrong?
4. How do you add the vfapi plug-in to the same folder as TMPGEnc?
