To Kwag,
I am sorry I didn't mention that, however, what should I do?
I also tried to lower the bit rate to 950 which produced a 795 Mb file. Then I burned it with Nero and the result was ok. But I like to use your template to get a better result. Please advise.
Thanks again,

Can this be used to either break up or compress files that are already in Vcd format?

Hi, Great guide, but i have run into a problem. did 3 movies from dvd rips just fine, then i tried to do The Others and Armagedon. On both of those movies after the rip i previewed in DVD2AVI and through the entire opening credits it would show them in english then skip back and show them in french. for example it would show " JERRY BRUCKHEIMER production" then immediately skip back and show "JERRY BRUCKHEIMER producion'" then continue on to the next credit and do the same thing. This only lasted untill the credits were through then the movie stops skiping unless there is more writing on the screen later in the movie as in armageddon. ex. shows a plane says "air force one" then skips back says it in french then movie continues. The audio is all in english though. If any one can help me fix this i apreciate it. Oh yeah almost forgot. I did the rips with both smart ripper and dvddecrypter it did the same thing with both. Thanks again for any help.

And to everyone else reading the post if you have successfully ripped and burned a VCD using my methods please reply with your DVD player models so I can see which models this format works on. -
I tried burning a 800Mb SVCD file using Nero. Nero wizard informs me the cd does not have the capacity as it has gome above the 700 MB /80 minute limit. I am sure this is something to do with the sector data size, but unsure how to correct it.
Can anyone advise.Al p -
is this necessary in the guide because i cant seem to make the blue bar move any further down the slide window after i do it
"Hit the next button when you are done. In the filter settings screen select source range. Skip this step only if you know for sure that your settings will work. I suggest you do this in the beginning to make sure that the settings are configured properly. Scroll to a part of the movie that has dialogue or a scene with lots of action. Hit set start frame. Scroll again a couple of seconds further. Hit set end frame. Click OK when you are done. Click next in the filter settings window. The bitrate settings window is what will be the window that determines the size of the movie. Since you unlocked your template first then everything should be adjustable. " -
To cheato: The reason why I suggested selecting the source range is to encode a small sample of the movie before you do the whole thing. If you didn't set the movie up right then it is better to have just let it encode for a minujte or two then a couple of hours to find out that the entire movie is messed up. It will save a lot of headaches. It is good to do this in the beginning if you are new to this. If you don't want to make a small sample and you are sure you have set everything right then skip this step.
To poughera: Which version of Nero were you using and did you select Super VideoCD from the menu? It should always burn in mode 2 so you will have 800MB of space on your CD. Another problem is that the file might be a little over 800MB like less then a MB. If you did not set Nero to overburn or your drive does not support then it will refuse to burn it. If you still can't get it to work then try VCDEasy if you can. As long as you have Windows 98 or ME then it will work on your computer. The second part to this guide covers how to use VCDEasy and at the top select SVCD 1.0 since you are burning an SVCD. -
thanx for reply newgen...anyway to take a dvd rip thats letter box and make it full screen?
-
If it's 16:9 the you can make it full screen without the borders. In the advanced tab under video arrange method set it to "Full Screen". The effect however is that the picture will look narrow at times but it doesn't bother me because I don't like borders.

Hi,
At least 7 times (or more) I've closely followed your directions to fit a movie on a CD; I used VirtualDub 1.4 to get the movie details and create the *.wav file. I created a special template like you suggest. I've got all the codecs installed. I bumped the priority on DirectShow Multimedia File Reader. Plus about 42 other things. None of the posts here address crashing of the system. The last 4 or 5 times I've tried it, it not only crashes my system, it reboots it!
The movie source is a downloaded .avi clip, 640X480, 24fps. I ran FixDV on it and it shows no problems. I converted it to .mpg with no compression a few days ago and watched it part of the way through.
Any suggestions?

I have hardly have any experience working with Divx/AVI files so my help is limited. I'm not sure why the program crashes whenever you try to encode. Here are some different things you can try but I don't know if they will help. Try using a different version of TMPGEnc. Another program can cause TMPGEnc to crash it could be another video program. A program that used to cause TMPGEnc to crash for me was Ulead DVD Factory. The only thing that stopped it was by unistalling the program and deleting all the files associated with the program. The way I found out it was that particular program was I read the "Illegal Function" dialog box. There would always be the same message every time it started to encode. It was a certain file. I used the find file program in Windows and found that the file was part of Ulead DVD Factory.

Good tip. Unfortunately, I don't have that program at all. I did use TMPGE to make an MPEG file since my post. It allowed me to view the video, which was my real objective.
I've used 2 different *.avi movie clips to learn about how to make VCD's, and my success is okay, sort of. Problem is that both are downloads that could be suspect to begin with.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers! -
Missing sound. I have used TMPGEnc to convert one movie from .Avi and it worked perfect. I tried again with another movie and I get no sound. I verified that I have sound in the .avi original version, but each time I try to convert I keep losing the sound. Can anyone help? I'm still new to all this.
-
I am not able to record sound from any Avi files that are recorded in Mpeg layer 3 format. Anyone know a plug or what needs to be done to corrrect this for TMPGEnc? I like the program, but 75% of the videos I have I can't use it on due to this problem. I think this may also be the problem others are having. Someon please post if you know how to answer this problem.

I am an absolute newby to all of this and some would say too old to learn new tricks but, this is an interest that I would really love to learn
I have an AVI clip and just want to burn it to CD to play on my stand alone DVD player.
I have downloaded and installed CladDVDXp and DVD2AVI but as I don't understand most of the termanology here I don't fully understand what I do next.
1) What file type do I have to convert this file to and what program do I use?
2) When I have converted the AVI file what stage of the guide would I be up to??
I am really sorry if this seems such a stupid thing to ask. Maybe there should be a newbies newbie guide page. -
Missing or bad sound fix. For those having problems with the sound try using the Virtual dub program that can be found under http://www.vcdhelp.com/virtualdubaudio.htm
If you convert your sound to a .wav file then combine that with your video file it should work fine. I'm still fine tuning to get a quality picture, but this has worked perfectly for the dvd rips into .avi files I've burned. You should be able to backup you dvds this way w/out losing the quality you want. -
Hi all
Newb problem/questions here:
I don't know what cd type to choose from the drop down menu in step 4/5 of the Project Wizard.
Problem: I'm using 700mb/80min cd-r's.
Questions: Do I select 700mb (ISO) or 80min (VCD/SVCD)?
And: Will I be able to fit 800mb on one of these discs or am I truely limited to 700mb?
*I could and might have to experiment but, I'd hate to make any more coasters(I have enough
)
Any help from someone who's had experience with this type of cd-r would be greatly appreciated. -
If you are choosing the type of CD it would be 700MB/80 VCD instead of ISO. If you are using a popular burning program like Nero then you will burn your VCD in mode 2 which gives you 800MB of space on a standard 80min CD. With your first few tries you should use CDRWs because the first few times you might make mistakes. I know I did and still do when I test new things.
The programs CladDVD and DVD2AVI are for DVD Ripping if you aren't starting out with a DVD then you can skip those steps because you already have a complete video file. Virtualdub seems to be the program that rips the sound from the AVI file so you will still need a video and audio file to load into TMPGEnc. Once they are loaded you will be converting the file into an MPEG. -
I just began having a small problem. I have been using DVD2AVI and TMPgenc for months. I had to reload my system and since then when I try to use TMPgenc, it says the D2V file isn't valid or is unsupported. I went back through my template and all and can't see why I'm getting that error.
I don't know whether it's a problem with not having the right codec installed or if the program is just being a pain.
Ideas and comments are appreciated!
Thanks,
Greg -
Make sure you installed the the vfapi plugin for TMPGEnc. Then go to Environmental Settings, click the VFAPI plugin tab, then make sure Direct show DVD2AVI Project File Reader is checked off. This will allow TMPGEnc to recognize those D2V files.

Hi. Great guide. I have followed the instructions on fitting a dvd to a vcd verbatim, but I am running into a problem I have not seen listed on this bulletin board.
For some reason, whenever I use the latest version as well as some older versions, of Nero, the burning process begins only to be interrupted about a quarter way through with the message "media is not a cd-r". I have used CD-r as well as CD-RW. when I tried it in EZ cd creator, it would not recognize my Mpeg file. The only way I can get these programs to recognize my file is when I chose standard vcd, but then the file is 1.01 gigs. when choosing non standard I get a file size of 690mb for my 700mb cd, but as I stated earlier, will not burn to cd. I know my settings are good because the movie plays excellent in the windows media player, with good video and audio that is in perfect synch.
Anybody want to field this one? -
Are you burning the MPEG as a VCD or an ISO? You should have 800MB of space on an 80min CDR. If you are burning the movie in Nero and you select VCD as the type of compilation you shouldn't have any trouble. And burn Disc-At-Once instead of track at once. If you still have problems than you should try VCDEasy to burn the VCD. As long as you have Windows 98 or ME installed it should work. If you have XP then it may not work because the ASPI layer isn't installed. The second part of my guide explains how to use VCDEasy.
-
Well, the Memorex CD-R as well as my Nashua CD-RW are both labeled 80 minute high capacity 700mb. I am choosing VCD, but you may have hit the nail on the head with the OS. I am indeed using Windows XP. WIll VCDEASY work with xp? or are there any drivers that I can use to make Nero work with XP?
Thanks for the quick reply.
Larry -
Even if the CD says it holds 700MB it will still hold 800MB if you burn in Mode 2. VCDEasy won't work with XP because of the ASPI layer not installed. Nero will still work though. If you just recently upgraded to XP then you should uninstall and reinstall Nero so that it will allow you to burn again. There are drivers you can install for XP but with my brief experience of using XP none of them worked. Under the tools section there is a link to ASPI drivers you can install for XP. You can try them and see if VCDEasy will recognize you burner. I ended up having to put 98 back on but it was my preference.
-
Thanks. I just downloaded the lasted update for Nero and it worked fine.
One question though, in your last post you mentioned setting it for mode 2 to get 800mb out of my 80 min, 700mb cd. Is that mode setting in Nero or were you referring to VCDEASY? -
I'd like to know the answer to the previous question myself. I use VCDEasy and am not sure wether to create movie files of 700 or 800mb (with TMPGEnc). So far I have stayed under 700mb to be safe.
-
To add to my previous post, it copied fine on a cd-rw. when I copied to a cd-r it gave me the same error message I received before. I worked around that by skipping the nero wizard and changed a setting in the ISO tab after choosing to create a vcd.
In the ISO tab I chose ISO level 1 and ISO 9660 character set and no relaxed iso restrictions. After doing that, it created the VCD perfectly. I hope this helps anyone with similar problems.
