  1. Newgen,

I recorded and encoded a VHS tape of an old black and white film and found that it was seven minutes too long to burn onto a 900MB CD-R. I thought that I would have to split the film into two parts, but I followed the TMPGEnc instructions on your guide and it worked perfectly on my stand alone DVD player, with hardly any loss of quality.

Fair enough, it was only a small reduction but I had to start somewhere!

However, it took six and a half hours to encode on a AMD athlon 1.4 Mhz. Think that I may need an upgrade if I am going to do this often.

    Just wanted to say thanks.

I used your guide but when I got to the step where you said save the "One Disk CD" to the wizards folder I found out I don't have a wizards folder. Is there something else I can do instead?

I have tried this following the instructions but it never works.
I have a 257Mb AVI file which I want to convert to a MPEG1 file to burn on as a VCD. When I first converted it with TMPG, it gave me an MPEG1 file of 772Mb. Thus I wanted to compress it enough to get it on on CD-R.
The funny thing is that when you play the MPEG1 file in a player (say windows media player) it it only 75 minutes long.
When I was adjusting the bitrate in TMPG on the AVI file, first of all it said that the estimated file size was 772Mb but was only 94% of an 80 minute CD. I ignored this and lowered the bitrate to 1048 to make the estimated file size 699.9 MB. When I hit start it took 2 hrs to encode and the file size is still 772Mb.
I've tried different bitrates but it always comes out as a 772Mb size file.
    ANy help?

Are you using TMPG 2.59? If so, you'll need to use 2.58 because of a 2.59 bug. Check out other posts in this forum for the link, I don't recall what it is off-hand.

Thanks for the link to version 2.58. I was using 2.55 and that didn't work so I went to the TMPG site and downloaded ver 2.59 and that didn't work. I will now try 2.58. If this doesn't work, the computer goes out the window javascript:emoticon('')

Thanks to everyone for your help and I especially appreciate the link to TMPG 5.8
After reading some other posts about disc capacity of Cd-R's, I now believe that the problem was with the Easy CD Creator 5.0 software that I used to burn the VCD. I should have been able to burn a 770Mb file to an 80 min CD-R but Easy Cd Creator 5.0's VCD Creator wouldn't let me until the file size was reduced to 700MB.
Anyway, I did compress the file and have a VCD.
Thanks to all and keep up the good work.

Try using the latest TMPGEnc which have fixed the bug from v2.59.
The latest one is TMPGEnc 2.510 and you can install i from here:

The subtitles have nothing to do with the audio. You have to use SubRip (or something like that) to get the subs from the ripped VOBs to SSA format. Then, using either AviSynth or VirtualDub and the TextSub filter, you frame serve this to TMPGEnc.
The subs will "take" some of the bitrate, leaving the rest of the picture slightly worse compared to the same movie without subs (at a given bitrate).

  12. Hi a little stuck..

I use TMPGenc 2.59 and do vcd's from avi files, i do not rip my own dvd's..

I am interested in one cd vcd's but canno tseem to get it right got a film, 1 hour 36 to fit on cdr 80, bit calc, says 830, so did that to use 99% of the cdr, stream is set to non standard, like in the guide, but the file came out as 1.1gigs....

Is this becasue i do not know the source of the avi, and some just won't fit onto one vcd? or is it i am just missing out on something

    Many thx in advance!!!

  15. I don't get it!! This is so frustrating!!

I've followed this guide, went through a lot of posts on this thread but couldn't find any answers!

I'm using TMPGEnc Plus v.2.510.49.157 and have encoded VCD movies using the bitrate calculator to make the file size 100% of the CD (80min). The resulting file size is something like 821,087,792 bytes.

However, when I drag the mpeg into Nero in order to create a VCD, the file size drops down to 723,697,664 bytes!!

Why does this happen??!!! I would really appreciate any helpI could get on this.

    Thanks!

  16. I think that Nero is still calculating as a standard 1150kbs VCD and as the XVCD that is created using this method is a lower bit rate, Nero will read it as a lower size file.

    Hope that this helps, Hex0.

    DESPERATLY IN NEED OF HELP!!!

hey i have made 2 one cd vcd's
the 1st one was like 82.59 minutes and was like 820 in filesize, i was pissed off at the bit. calc., but i later found out that it was my TMPGEnc 2.59, so i tried 2.58 and it worked for the second one perfect. but back to the first. when i tried to burn it woudnt let me fit it all and i had to overburn, it was unsucesful. it measuerud it by minutes not filesize in nero. so i am pissed. hopefully when i burn teh 2nd one i will have more success.
now on to the 3rd and 4th attempts.
3rd one was Gangs of New York, super high quality avi (not sure maybe xvid) and it was liek 2.38.13 in total. i had to do a bitrate of 1137, audio 160) and it look fine. untill it go half thru and the screen turned black but there was stil audio. the bad news was i deleted the source files and had to redownload
4th attemp: Lord of the Rinsg, 2 towers, XvID, and its high qual.
i am going to use to one cd vcd method thing, but divide it into 2 cd's, just because its so long. so i have to use a bitrate of 1035 for the 2 cd's.
well i convert the audio to wav and do all teh crap. then convert'
well the bloody audio doesnt work!!!
    PLEASE HELP
    WHAT DO I DO
    thanx

  20. 'Fraid not EnNiS, as the system that I use, I don't need to split the audio out. I have not got into DivX at all or ripping from DVDs. However, the bitrate was all I could help you on as I had been burning to a 900MB CD-R where I discovered a similar issue.

My experience is backing up VHS cassettes and my VCR to Cannopus ADVC-50 to TEMPGEnc to (X)VCD to DVD player works a treat.

I did that, and did everything else selected in the guide. When I looked at the movie info in TMPGEnc, it said 145 min 19 sec....but on the dvd it says only 117 min. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I used the calculator to set my bitrate, and it said 99.9 percent of the CD would be used for a file size that was greater then the 650 mb cd I'm using, but not too much over, about 700. That's not the main problem I'm having though. What's really happening is after I put in the appropriate bitrate, and encode it, I'm getting a file size of over a gig. Any idea what happened?
I had this problem too initially. Two things to look out for:

    1) When using the bitrate calculator be sure to open 'advanced' and enter '2' as the number of tracks for a stereo recording.

    2) Be certain that the bit rate you enter is actually the bit rate being recorded. Check the file description in the file output name box near the bottom of the page. You have to either unlock the bitrate; change it then lock it again or else enter the average bit rate via the settings tab next to the rate control mode box, otherwise the bit rate will default to 1150.

A good idea when desperate is to open the guide on line and read it word for word while setting TMPGEnc. It's amazing how easy it is to miss some crucial setting or other.

Anyway, I have managed transfer several full length movies to single (74min) CD's and play them back on my Pioneer DV-350. The picture quality (at 432x240) has been at least equal to those made on my S-VHS recorder and my frends refuse to believe I'm using ordinary CD blanks. Sound-synch is slightly problematic but then it is also with commercial DVD's (check out the letterboxed side of Forbidden Planet). It's a measure of just how convincing the picture quality is that I even notice minor sound synch problems.

If you're using TMPGEnc v.2.59, apparently it has a bug that won't let you change the filesize. Try a different version if that's the case.
