The guide is superb.....
I do have one question. I was able to complete my first movie onto one cdr on the first try because the guide is self explanatory. The sound is great however, during fast movement scenes in the movie, I can see the horizontal lines that lags around the fast moving object. For example, someone waving their hands or fighting scenes or someone running in the scene.
I tried doing all kinds of re-encode with every options possible with TMPG and still can't fix the problem. Every dvd movie I rip and burn have the same problem. I use 2 different dvd-rom, 2 different cdrw-drive, burn from 2x to 40x, use different cdr-cdrw media and the problem is still there.
Anyone have any idea?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom -
Hi Tom:
Sounds like this might be a PAL DVD that was copied. The VCD should have been encoded using deinterlace screen under advanced screen in TMPGenc. I believe the last time I used this filter it was even/odd field but you should preview the filters first in TMPGenc. I read in the DVD2SVCD forum that deinterlace filter is only required for PAL DVDs.
The other problem may be in the NTSC/PAL converter in your DVD player. I just tested two Philips DVDs (724 and 580MT) and both showed interlace artifacts even in the PAL DVD when using progressive scan (724) or Hi-Res (580MT) so the issue may already be in the player. If not, then see the first comment.Druidmeister -
All the movie I rip are NTSC usa version. I have a JVC dvd player that I just bought from bestbuy last week for $129. It support cdr-w, vcd, dvd, jpeg, mp3.
I went to the advance tab in TMPG and check the deinterlace filter, after encode was done I burned it with Nero and play it on my JVC and still have the same problem. Although, it did seem to help a bit, but not much, the problem still exist.
If only I can get this horizontal line to disappear during fast movement scenes. The rest is cake.
Anyone else that can help?
Thanks,
Tom -
I read your very in depth procedure for burning a VCD on one disk and it was very helpful. I am new to this VCD burning and I am having a few issues I cannot sort out. Even after following your procedure and cutting the video at beginning and end of all non movie related stuff, i still cannot get TMPGEnc to encode an AVI file to fit on one disk. My original movie was 658Mb in length and after the conversion it was just over a gig. I tried the Mpeg non standard option and it still did not help. Also, is there a way to speed up the encoding process from 5 hours to maybe about an hour? I am at my wits end and have spent countless hours in front of the computer trying to figure out a way to put a movie in VCD format and on one disk. I would appreciate any input you may have to help me out.
Again, excellent guide you made!!!!" The worst day fishing is better than the best day at work"

Merry Christmas to all.....
I stayed late last night and I finally got the vcd to work perfectly now. Got rid of the horizontal lines. My settings was just off a bit.
It's all good.
Thanks,

Yes please post the settings you had before as well so that I can compare to what I was doing wrong on some of mine ... mine were predominantly one VCD issues with having vertical lines in action scenes on a PAL video playing through a Philips 724 and 580MT. Congrats! You are becoming an expert...

There are ways to trim time and I found the best guide on this was in the DVD2SVCD guidance documents. I don't think you will be down to one hour with any good results. Most of the guides talk of rip/encode over night. Even the one VCD process takes up to four hours for me with CBR.
Happy New Year guys!Druidmeister -
Okay, hope this help all of those who still have problems:
This setting is for making a NTSC version VCD.
Follow the guide as you would normally do, however make sure that when you are at the very end CHOOSING Bitrate Setting page under wizard. This is the page where you have to choose:
Average video bitrate, Audio bitrate, Estimated file size, and what type of media 74min or 80min and % disk capacity.
THE KEY IS : Click on the EXPERT button make sure all your settings match this:
Under Video Tab:
Stream type: MPEG-1 Video
Size: 352x240 *make sure this is 352x240
Aspect ratio: 4:3 525 line (NTSC)
Frame rate: 29.97 fps
Rate control mode: Constant (CBR)
Bitrate: Around 700 to 1000 "you can change it later at the end"
VBV buffer size: 40
Motion search precision: Normal
Under Advance Tab:
Video source type: Interlace
Field order: Bottom field (field B)
Source aspect ratio: 4:3 525 line (NTCS, 704x480)
Video arrange method: Full screen
Under Sytem Tab:
Stream type: MPEG-1 (non-standard) *make sure this is selected or it will not fit onto 1 disc after you finish decoding.
PRESS OK and you will be back at the Bitrate Setting page. Here you can move the slider or change the number % of disk capacity to fit either a 74min or 80min cdr depending on what you choose.
Hope this help.
*For time consumtion, decode a small portion of the movie and burn it to a cdr-w and test it on your dvd player to see if it's correct, rather than decoding the whole movie over 2 or 3 hours and finding out that it's still not right.
Good luck.
Thanks,

I am having trouble converting a Divx movie to a small file size with TMPGEnc. I have tried both methods (CBR and VBR) with no usable result. I have a 715,832 MB Divx file. When I import this into NERO it says it is 900+ MB. So I imported the file into TMPGEnc to encode using your instructions for CBR and VBR (900 kbit/sec bitrate), Both times is bloated my file to 900+ MB. I have gone through this forum and checked everything that seemed to fix the problems others were having, but they do not fix my problem. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to try something else? BTW, the movie I am trying to burn on an 80 min CD is approximately 1 hour 35 min. Please advise.

Hi Hvacigar:
Not sure if this will help much but I might suggest burning through Nero Express screen rather than the Nero ROM screen. I found that the ROM screen sometimes did not register the file size correctly.
Otherwise I will keep quite.Druidmeister -
I have read through your guide and also most of the posts out there so far, but none have helped me in keeping the .mpg size below 1Gig. I am using TMPGenc Plus, and I know your guide refers to the freeware version. Are there any extra settings that need to be changed in the Plus version to keep the size of the .mpg file respectable. eg. MPEG tools settings, etc? Thanks!

I was able to put LOTR Fellowship of the Ring into 1 80min cdr. The picture is good and the sound is superb. After lots of experiment with encoding the movie with TMPG, I finally did it. I felt like I can put just about any dvd movie onto 1 disk now. LOTR was a 3 hour movie and I accomplished it.
Thanks again to your guide.

Hey guys, my bad, I guess I didnt read enough posts. I was using TMPGenc 2.59 the whole time. Got 2.58 and it worked like a charm. Hey Tom, I'd be interested to know what settings you used for LOTR. I tried to burn Black Hawk Down using a 500 bitrate onto a 74-min CD-R. It played well on my PC DVD player but was pretty choppy on my standalone. You guys can add another DVD player to the list that works with VCD. I have an Oritron DVD820. Later.

Ok here is my Problem, I have read all the posts and am amazed to what you guys do. I am trying to encode a movie called 'bend it beckham' whenever I try to encode it, TMPGEnc reads the file to be of 299mins although is only 90 mins and then gives me a huge file estimate and when I start encoding it craps out. Anyone faced such a problem?
thanks -
I followed tomtheman's instructions to the letter and I still cannot get my 720 MB Divx movie to be less than 900 MB when I use TMPGenc. And I used Nero Express instead of Nero ROM and it still showed over 900 MB for the burn. I do not know what the rest of you are doing, but I am having a hell of a time getting this to work. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I just read the 2.59 issues post. I will be loading up 2.58 right now. This is crazy.
-
Yep, 2.58. Hopefully soon there will be a 2.6 to solve alll our problems.
I found that using 29.97 caused some non-smooth playback on my DVD Players. I usually set for 23.97 with good results.
I still have issues with blockiness/pixelation on some movies ... the best have been Ballistic and Bad Company and the worst for pixelation even in SVCD mode included Goldmember and We Were Soldiers. We some theories that possibly the pixelation may be caused by higher source bitrates perhaps due to more color in the scenes but are still at a loss. Note: we own the movies and are using these as standards for my documentary video transfer. So far no Holy Grail. We have a critical viewing application of a 60" Hitachi so that is the standard we have set. And again, increasing the bitrate even on single VCD applications or multiple SVCds does not solve the problem of blockiness. Suggestions?
And Happy New Years Guys! Live long and prosper!Druidmeister -
Tom, those are the exact settings I used when encoding Black Hawk Down, and the bitrate I ended up using was 500. I've encoded other movies and since they were smaller was able to use a higher bitrate. The playback on those were a lot smoother. I guess what I am most curious about the settings you used for LOTR are Bitrate and Audio settings. Otherwise, your standalone may just be more tolerant to lower bitrate than mine is.
By the way, I have to say this is one of the most informational forums I have ever been a part off. Keep up the good posts. -
Well, I'm doing something wrong. No matter what I set the average bitrate to, I get the same file size. I am using MPEG-1 Video-CD (non-standard) in the System tab, too.
If someone can help me I certainly would appreciate it. I can't figure out what I'm missing.
Here are my settings:
Video tab
352 X 240, 29.97 fps, 2-pass VBR (min=0, avg=500,max=1150)
//I've tried all sorts of numbers for avg bitrate.
System tab
MPEG-1 Video-CD (non-standard)
If anyone wants the rest of the settings I can offer them; I didn't think they mattered here. I left them as default.
Thanks in advance.

Are you using TMPGEnc 2.59? That was my problem all along, 2.58 works like a charm.

Hey newgen, I am using, or at least trying to use CladDVD to rip as you suggested. It has worked great until now, I receive a message that it has expired. I thought it was freeware. I've tried reinstalling, redownloading and reinstalling, no luck. Any ideas?

Hi!
This guide is very informative, but i have a problem. My recording software won't allow these non-standard formats for vcd burning.I have tried several templates for putting a full movie on 1 vcd and none of them can be burned to disc using Stomp software. Can someone tell me how to get Stomp to accept a file it says is not compliant?(It seems to be the only program i can burn with AT ALL)Nero won't work right and neither will easy cd platinumcould i maybe save the mpeg file as an ISO?and if so,HOW?StompRecordNowMAX user:)

Hi, great guide and everything, only one problem: the widescreen format is stretched to full screen, so I have ultra-long faces and skinny people, etc. Any suggestions?
Thanks! -
Hi, I cannot find an earlier version of TMPGEnc - all versions I can find are 2.59 - is someone prepared to zip and email me 2.58 please? If so, I'll supply you with an email address....
Thanks!
