Hey guys,
I was wondering if there was an HD media player something like this,
that was updatable, to make it future proof.
I have a hunch that 2 years from now, new video formats will come out, and i'd have to shell out another 100 bucks to get another HD media player, that supports those new video formats.

YEp, it's called a HTPC. But it would be cheaper to shell out another 100 bucks every other year...

It's basically not possible in a $100 player. They use hardware decoder chips not powerful CPUs to decompress video. A new codec will require a new decoder chip, not just a firmware update. Even if that wasn't the case, companies have no interest in giving you more functionality for free. They're rather sell you a new device.
