What happens with video that has PAL DVD resolution (720x576) and plays on HD or FullHD LCD screen ? do we see black stripes, do we see pixelization of the video or something else?

It gets upsampled to the resolution of your LCD. If you're supposed to see black bars, you will. In general, DVDs look very good on a hi-def TV monitor, maybe not all that different from the way they look on a widescreen hi-def computer monitor.

In theory, the H.264 standard (unlike the H.262 for mpeg2) says that for SD resolutions everything horizontally longer than 704 must go to overscan.Last edited by Alex_ander; 15th Oct 2012 at 05:10.
