Hye,
I miss a point to solve this.
I ripped some of my DVDs on HDD to play them directly on my FullHD SmartTV via the USB HDD and no more through DVD player.
Now, my Smart TV (16:9) supports only 2 zoom mode from an USB source.
Some films play full screen, while other have 2 black horizal pad.
I thought that this is a SAR and DAR issue, but when I look at some files I'm lost, as they show identical SAR & DAR.
Are the results from ffmpeg 1.0 and MediaInfo 0.7.60

Which point do I missed ???
Thanks
P.S.
I tried these on a film showing with 2 black horizontal lines, but still no change.
ffmpeg -i VTS_02_1.vob -c:a copy -c:v mpeg2video -sameq -async 1 -aspect 4:3 VTS_02_1reCoded.vob
ffmpeg -i VTS_02_1.vob -c:a copy -c:v mpeg2video -sameq -async 1 -vf setsar=16:15 -aspect 4:3 VTS_02_1-test.vob

Unless a film is of the exact same ratio as your TV set (1.78:1), it's supposed to have black bars, either on the sides (for 1.33:1 films) or above and below (for 2.35:1 films). Most films aren't the ratio of your TV set and have one or the other. In the case of Anastasia (and Author 3), it's a 2.35:1 film and is supposed to have the horizontal black bars.

You don't seem to be claiming they're playing stretched (circles showing as ovals), so I don't think you're creating them incorrectly.

I didn't create them, they've been ripped from my original DVDs.You don't seem to be claiming they're playing stretched (circles showing as ovals), so I don't think you're creating them incorrectly.

All I try to figure out, is why all show unstreched, but some full screen, while other with horizontal black lines.

They are no side black bars, that's what puzzle me.either on the sides (for 1.33:1 films)

How do you come to this??In the case of Anastasia (and Author 3), it's a 2.35:1 film and is supposed to have the horizontal black bars.

But now I believe that neither ffmpeg nor MediaInfo do show actual SAR & DAR
Indeed, if I select "show as original" on my TV(1980x1080), Anastasia & Arthur3 appear as a tiny 16/9, while Balto appears as tiny 1:1 film
That seems the key, the actual SAR would be different that the reported one.

These are from DVDs, right? There are only 2 possible DARs, 4:3 or 16:9. Outside of that, you can crop away the black and do a 1:1 resize to find the true aspect ratio. I use Gordian Knot for such things although there are other ways, I'm sure.

Look, open your VOBs in something where you can see them. I use DGIndex, which also gives the DAR of the video. If you have a 16:9 DVD and there are still black bars on the top and bottom then you can be sure the movie is wider than your TV set's ratio of 1.78:1 and you're supposed to view the video/DVD with black bars above and below (unless you use the TV set's zoom function). If the DVD is 4:3, then you're always supposed to see black bars on the sides of a 16:9 TV set (and sometimes above and below too, if it's widescreen 4:3), unless you use the remote control to zoom the video.
