Try ImgBurn. It's free. It works reliably. If it doesn't work you have big problems. Your error message could be trying to tell you in a very bad manner that your burner lacks a write strategy for your discs. ImgBurn can usually handle this situation, especially if you will keep your burn speeds low (I'd recommend 16x for CD and 4x for DVD). However, you can also try to find more recent firmware for your burner as that could also help.
Finally, note that weird error messages may also be caused by low quality media. You should be able to use most CD-R discs OK, but the only consistent high quality manufacturers left for DVD media are Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden. -
looks like a bad disc.

the power calibration fails, it could be a bad laser unfortunately.

whytte - Do you pay attention to what you are told?
I told you to try updating the firmware. "Power calibration" is a very misleading error and it can be caused by firmware problems. If updating the firmware does not work, then you must replaced the drive. -

Drives haven't been getting better since the manufacturing moved to China. JMHO
Bad laser, from someone who's on this board since 2005 means "bad laser".
I have old drives from ten years ago - built like tanks, burn slow.
the new ones weigh half as much, last 1/10th as long. AND: They do ship bad drives from the egg and others.;/ l ,[____], Its a Jeep thing,

You, the one asking questions, did not say anything at all about having performed a firmware update, therefore, since no one here has a crystal ball, the statement was made that you should do a firmware update. I note that you have not stated whether or not this has actually been done.
I would offer you my opinion but your attitude has eliminated any interest on my part of offering you any assistance.
Have a nice day.
