ImgBurn freezing while burning BluRay (authored by Multiavchd)
ImgBurn is freezing almost all the time now when burning a BluRay compliant BDMV file structure which was created using Multiavchd.
I am using an external USB LiteOn BR Burner which I’ve used successfully to burn Bluray with ImgBurn (with prior issues as well turning expensive BR blanks to toasters). In the recent past, about 75% -90% of attempts of Bluray with Imgburn were successful, but now they are all failing.
Failure is defined at completion percentages such as 32%, 49%, 17%, even 83%. The Write Rate just stops to 0 zero and the ImgBurn just hangs. The Buffer is always at 100% and the Device Buffer is always 98%-100% (is that normal?)
In the past I have used Imgburn with flawless burning of Multiavchd to DVD5 or DL DVD9s.
I tried NeroExpress on Nero10 to do a similar file write but that also failed at 32% completion.
I even did a Data Bluray of the same Multiavchd BDMV recording of 16.11GB using the LiteOne with Cyberlink BluRay Suite and that worked fine, no buffer issue. I also did a standard data dvd of 1.2GB to a DVD5 and that was fine , to the same LiteOn using Nero Express. ** So the LiteOn drive is capable of writing to BR blanks**
Too many BR blanks are being wasted and I am stumped. Should I try some other burning software?
Also, through the years, I’ve always used the ImgBurn function of WRITE FILES/FOLDER TO DISC but never really understood if it was burning an image “Iso” file or something else? How can ImgBurn burn an “image” to a disc that a BR player can read (AVCHD format) but that is not a true “iso”?
Thanks for any help

Does your USB enclosure have its own power supply? Many weird problems happen when people try to use USB enclosures without their own power supplies and they go away when they switch to powered enclosures. I VERY strongly recommend that you use a powered enclosure for this burner if you are not doing so. And if you are going to just say "But it worked in the past without problems when I used my non-powered enclosure" then don't even bother replying or trying to get advice. I am completely serious that you need to ALWAYS use powered enclosures. I simply do not own any without power supplies.
What kind of blanks are you using and who makes them? Single layer BD-R? BD-R LTH? BD-RE? etc.
How fast are you burning? I do not recommend burning at the maximum speed and this can be an issue with some media. 4x or 2x is safer. You may need to consider the possibility that the drive is simply going bad but answer the other questions I asked so we have more info to make conclusions from.
I cannot answer the questions near the end about how ImgBurn really works as I don't know. -
jman98 - yes it is a powered self enclosure LiteON USB BR Burner eHBU212

I use Verbatim BD-R 25GB 6X. ImgBurn starts burning at about 17,800kb/s , then freezes at 17-83% as noted. It's quite frustrating and wasteful of discs.
Steve(MS) - I don't understand the question. I use Multiavchd to author the MPEG2 raw data to a BDMV structure, then ImgBurn to attempt to burn to BD-R -
My question pertains to whether your source has some type of copy protection and if so what program was used to remove copy protection.
Perhaps this doesn't apply to you but we have had a rash of "problems" by people that have burn failure here lately because they are either
using outdated decrypters or using programs to copy discs with copy protection that cannot deal with copy protection.
The most reliable ways to deal with copy protected discs is to use either anydvd or dvdfab.
I see you are using usb, if so use no higher than 4X burn speed. -
Steve(MS) - the data is either MPEG2 or my personal Hauppauge and I have successfully authored by multiavchd and burned by ImgBurn to BD-R several times (with few failures which I ignored) - but now the failures are overwhelming which is bothersome. I can live with 10-20% failure rate but 90% is a problem.
i agree, the slower speed is better and it appears that ImgBurn is writing at 3.9x or 4.0x per the screen. Then fails anywhere from 17-83% completion, resulting in a toasted disc.
I'm stumped, but will try to download burner firmware from Liteon and reinstall Imgburn.Last edited by texas1; 18th Sep 2012 at 16:28.

also, while ImgBurn is hanging (32% for example), the clock keeps ticking on the screenshot , and the BR burner keeps humming with the green light blinking as if its trying to write. But when I kill the burner (power off/on) , sometimes the disc only shows a 2k configuration file - but sometimes it shows a greyed out image of the 16gb fileset --- weird. Should I just wait 3 or 4 hours for the thing to come back to life and finish? I guess I'll try that. Also, the Task Manager still shows ImgBurn at about 105,000k as a live process.

Yeah. something is going on with your burner/computer more than likely.
Just curious though, after multiachd, have you watched the results with a media player to make sure the files are playable? -
Perhaps 4X is too fast for your usb/computer, you could try a slower speed and see if you can make a good disc.
Do you have any trouble burning a dvd with your setup? -
well some good news, as Steve(MS) suggested above.
I went to another dual core laptop which did not have any related software and was able to copy the 16.11GB *data* BD-R to the desktop within 20 minutes at transfer rates that started low and peaked at 20.8MBS.
Then downloaded the 2.5.7 ImgBurn, setting the Write rate at 4X, not MAX, for the Verbatim BD-R 6X and the burn was successful!
Looking at the ImgBurn screenshot:
The Writing was done at the stated 4X but the actual rate was 3.3X-3.7X
The "Buffer" was a constant 100% - I presume this is the laptop buffer.
The "Device Buffer" varied wildly from 1% to 85/90%, occasionally touching 100% but quickly reducing. I presume this is a sign of a healthy burn as on my prior bad burns this "Device Buffer" was stuck at 98-100% with no variation beyond that.
The ImgBurn log at the bottom showed an interesting item --- the "Filling Buffer" was 80MB. On my prior burns, this was only 40MB. So I presume the bigger the better, but how to always make it have 80MB??
Only other differnce in the new laptop is that it does not have Nero10 or Cyberlink. I've read that perhaps these 2 copying softwares can cause conflict (even though they were not active). I'll try other ImgBurns after loading these 2 softwares and if things go poorly, will uninstall.
thanks for your help... so far so good.
