  1. Ok this problem has persisted for a while I am finally fed up enough to try and find a real solution.

sometimes I will try tagging an album of mp3's and it won't tag

IE nothing "sticks" I open id3 tag it and make the changes and know it did not work when woosh it does it real fast and indicates its done

but when you leave and come back no changes.

there is something wrong with the mp3 files but I don't know how to "FIX" whatever is wrong. I THINK I was able to bypass this by tagging in media monkey but thats a pain.

usually I just find another download and it does not happen with the new files.

First does anyone know whats wrong with the files?

Second is there a 'fixer" that will check a file and correct whatever is wrong with it missing from it or corrupt inside it so taggers can edit the files?

Yes I know this problem. - this is using windows xp - it might be slightly different with other versions of windows.

You need to right click the actual file itself and go into properties to change it deep in the file.

I would try to doing the auto tagging with some cassettes that I dubbed and it wouldn't tag the tracks right. Turns out somehow the internal meta data windows popped in (can't remember the whole process right now) was not correct.

You have to click the advanced tab under summary. Chances are something is screwy in this screen and is messing up your tagging info in the software programs. You have to dig into the code so to speak to get to the root of the problem.

Hope this helps and hope this is on target to your problem.

I know it drove me nuts when I was fooling around with that stuff. I can't remember if I just stumbled upon it or if I had to search the net for it.

    Good luck.

  3. these files have no ID3 tag and I can not add or change the id3 tag info. ie it seems like a "read only" error kind of thing.

    Thats different isn't it?

Have you checked the status of the offending files by right clicking the properties of each? You can uncheck read only if it really is that way.

It would be the last line under general where it says "attributes" - again at least on win xp which is what I'm surfing on right now.

Good luck. Hope you find what you need.

Fyi have you thought about reencoding them to a new file? Maybe that might get rid of this bug?

  5. I know how to attrib files. sometimes the folders say read only for some strange reason and unchecking does nothing copying them to a new folder solves that weird one (not sure if its related)

the files do NOT show as read only they just "behave" as it.

yes I can re-encode them and that will solve the problem but is self defeating because now your taking an already crappy mp3 encoding and transcoding it again making it even crappier
