the model bought was unit only without frills
plugged it in and win 7 did the drivers installation and under hardware it was listed along with the previous lg burner that I had removed
can't find a way of checking current firmware
perhaps you can guide me...?
BDR-207DBK Firmware v1.21 off pioneer website was the version tried to install;
"target not found" flashed in a black background box
no update! nothing recognised
disappointment reigns as I thought I had a machine that could burn anything!

*** Now that you have read me, do some other things. ***
Instructions on finding firmware version:
If you have Nero installed (we don't recommend using it for burning, but that's another story) you can use Info Tool to get this information.
thanks pioneer 207M
what do you recommend for burning
using imageburn;its free;its good!
I've seen that TDK uses Ritek to make their BD media, so they probably use only cheap manufacturers for their DVDs too. In the past Japanese TDK DVDs were made by Taiyo Yuden but I doubt that has been true for some years now.
The only reliable media manufacturers any more are Verbatim (avoid the cheap Life series, but all other types including DataLifePlus are fine) and Taiyo Yuden.
ImgBurn may also be able to tell you the firmware version of your burner. Go into Tools->Drive->Capabilities.
TDK DVDs have been garbage for years in Europe.
will stick to your recommendations
