With most DVDs my JVC player freezes up about two thirds of the way through a movie. Leaves a broken up static picture on the screen. I can take the same DVD and play it successfully on my other DVD player which is a Zenith. So the problem is not the media. This problem with the JVC is reproducible in that it will always freeze up at the same place if you go back a track and start the player again. Anyone have any ideas?

    Derek.

Research how to clean the lens in the DVD drive in the player and if you are VERY lucky it will fix the issue. No promises. And do understand that if you attempt to do this yourself that it will void the warranty, should this player still be under warranty. This is a sure sign that the drive in the player is going bad and this may not solve the problem or may only postpone its inevitable death. I have a similar issue with my old Momitsu BluRay player and doing this bought me a little time but in the end I had to buy a replacement player.

Thank you for the suggestion but I am not optimistic that it will fix the problem as most of a DVD plays successfully. I wonder if there is a problem with the "arm" ( don't know what it is called) that moves the laser across the disk.

I once had a JVC DVD player that had the same problem. It always choked up at the layer-break point of the disc. You did not mention model number or age of the unit. If it is an old one, you should really consider replacing it.

I would say that you are quite correct. I didn't know that DVDs had two layers before your answer. The article that I just read did talk about a possible freeze up for a second at the breakpoint. As stated before my freeze up is permanent!

The jvc model number is HR-XVC40BC and it says on the device that it was manufactured in Feb 2009. This may be a Canadian number.

Yes, you are probably right about getting a replacement. In fact this is essentially a no brainer as Amazon has a top rated Sony device for $43 with free shipping.
