  1. whoa whoa whoa there, calm down, its just sVCDs, no need to go overboard. anyway, thanks for your reply. . sort of. . . but some people dont give a '''' about the file size and '''' like that. Its your opinion, as well as it is mine. Anyway, i was only talking about the visual quality, not the damn file loss. Most people only care about the output and how it looks on TV, and some just want to save CD space. . . unlike you. . . . Try it out for yourself, i guarandamntee you will like the result if you want to save space, as well as have almost the same visual quality.

  3. "Trying out for yourself" is self evident.

However, common sense will also tell you that converting to a lossy format first (e.g., DivX) will lead to a loss of quality, not to mention a waste of time.

The fact that you can compress to a lower bitrate after converting to DivX/ASF first is not a mystery. It's been described many times before and the reasons why is obvious. Detail has been lost from the original DVD to DivX/ASF. This is the reason. There isn't some sort of magical transformation that occurs when you compress it to another lossy format first.

If this is the effect you are looking for to fit more on one disc, then it is easily done with a simple blur/soft filter. Not only this this much more configurable and adjustable, it's also much faster.

  4. Whatever you say. i dont give a '''' about "some lossy format" and all that other stuff your talking about. . . . . . all i could say is that I converted a .avi Divx clip to sVCD (190mb), and then i converted the same divx .avi to .asf (for my 384 mb of ram/700 mhz duron, it takes 8 minutes for a 70 mb .avi divx clip) then to .mpg. . .(95mb), Same Visual Quality, and nothing really really "self-evident" that it loss any thing more than a little sound quality. Assume all you want, but im satisfied, and i just wanted to share it with more people to let them know that there could be another method of fitting over 100 minute movies on a single cd.

Well your easily pleased that's all i have to say, if you ever saw a properly encoded SVCD i think you'd change your tune. BTW i could probably fit many hours of Digital Video on a single CD as an SVCD. it'd be black and white, 16x16 res, decent FPS but it'd still be digital and could even look decent.

  6. I have converted DIVX to SVCD before and you do lose alot of colour information. So I know what you are saying, but your method is one big flaw.

Convert a DVD to SVCD in one step and then do so with your ASF, you will see the same file size and worse quality with your ASF. If you want to stay in the dark and beat a dead horse, go for it. Those who know about this are trying to help out others who are new to digital video and letting them know this method is not an option.
