  1. Hi
I purchased a new Panny Blueray Player that doesn't play Xvid/DIVX. (my mistake)
It will play MKV, but not AVI.
Is there a way I can fool it by rewriting the header, or any other method other than re-encoding?
My movies are all in xvid....

    Thanks

  2. Can you return it?

If you have lots of divx/xvid/avi you're probably better off with a set top box. When buying DVD players I've always purchased divx certified players. But they don't play HD resolution avi files. I have a WD set top box. It has its quirks, but it plays most anything HD. Avi,Divx,xvid,mkv,mp4, m2ts, ts files etc..

You can pretty much just copy the files on to play them. It can be finicky about audio formats and bit rates. But if you have standard avi files SD or HD it should play them.

I don[t think you can fool the player because it has limited video and audio codec support. Even if you put the divx in an mkv container it will probably say "unsupported video codec" when you try to play it.

Plays MKV videos ... huh ?? ... Cool ... How about posting back and include the model number ... is it built for the USA ??

    Check Link >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWLgHSiLW38

The comments suggest ... I will pass ... I will stick with my PC in my bedroom ... that is networked with the main [my PC] in the garage.

Or just use ConvertXtoDVD and make it a DVD to play on my Philips 5960 DVD Player in my bedroom
Or my Panasonic EH50 in my garage or my Panasonic EZ27 in my living room.

  4. I agree with MilesAhead and lacywest, we need to know codecs and contains that your bluray player support before make any suggestion even if you change the contain but if your player is not support video codec then your bluray player will not play your file same as before since it can't decode file.

If it can play xvid than simply remux it to mkv with something like winff. It will not be reencoded just repackaged. (use the passthrough presets)

However it must be able to play the codec in order to work. Like the others posted we need to know what the original video was. Xvid implies standard def video but not necessarily. Also there might be quirky stuff laying underneath the video that the player might not like thus a reencode might be required.

Mediainfo will tell you the specs of your xvid file. REad up on exactly what your player will play. Then work on converting the file with something like ripbot264 or handbrake if it does not conform to the player. But of course you don't want that but if it can't play it you'll have to convert.

  6. Hi again
Its a model DMP-BDT220PC. Manual says it plays MKV, but no Divx. I tried to take a Divx and rewrite it through "Xvid4psp" as a MKV, but it won't play it. It only plays MP4, MKV, AVC and AVCHD. It will play a re-encoded to 264 in a MKV shell. But offcourse thats a pain...

Do you mean this one ?

I don't think it's support Xvid4psp video codec (format like mp4 or mkv is just a shell that contain video and audio, your player must support 3 of them or else it will not play like what happen to you now).
If your video hasn't subtitle file like .srt or .ass I think it's better to convert them into Mp4(h264/aac), it's standard for many hardware player now day.

  9. I think you are right. I am looking into a different work around using Serviio and/or WMP12. I am having troubles figuring out how to transcode Xvid to h264 in WMP. Anyone know if its possible?

    Thanks for your input.

  10. Well, after hours of trial and error........I have come to this conclusion for my issue. I'm keeping the DMP-BDT220PC cause its rock hard stable for network functions and Netflix. Picture is excellent. I have set up WMP12 to serve my WTS and MP4 HD files, but its Xvid and mkv streaming is poor. I have also set up a Network Drive for the player. The player plays mkv files converted from Xvid off of the network drive and does a good job of it. I used Xvid4psp to do the conversion and I am very happy with its performance. (2 hour movie in 20 minutes)

  11. Seems like it would be easy to include xvid support (and non-official divx support) since it wouldn't cost them anything extra as long as they didn't put "divx" on the box. It seems like divx/xvid support is pretty common these days in many players.

  12. Its probably the reason why this model was on sale so quick. About $100 off retail.

  13. I'm not quite sure what the deal is. I've purchased many Phillips DVD players. All have had divx/xvid support. But when I go to divx.com to find out about the new divx stuff, all they want to talk about is mkv and 264. Leads me to believe anything BluRay probably will not have divx support built in. I've never owned a BluRay player. I'm just trying to piece this stuff together from what I read. If anyone has a BluRay disc player that has divx support I'd be interested in any info, just out of curiosity.

Thanks for the info. I can understand divx adopting x264 but I don't fathom just dumping support for divx/xvid. Good to know it's combined on some players.

I don't think they do. Its probably just not being advertised.

I haven't tried in awhile but if I remember right the ps3 does divx too - I believe it has the vod support for divx (if that is still around, what with vudu and netflix in full swing).

FYI the ps3 is my bluray player.
