I currently use Ulead VideoStudio4 to capture DV from my camcorder through a firewire card. I see a lot of comment on VirtualDub. Will Vdub capture DV via a firewire card? (it seems to have some advantages).

It works only if you have a DV codec for "Video for Windows" which is the older video support method under Windows. If you have only "Windows Driver Model (WDM)" / DirectShow it won't work.
Best way is to try it.

I can';t
I get a screen of gray and red pixels.
Also Virtual Dub hates DV Type 1, which is what most capture programs use. -
Try the Scenalyzer Live Trial. I did after seeing rave comments for it and I bought it! Works really well! (actually I think I have a flaky Firewire card but still...)
It produces Type-2 which feed nicely into VirtualDub
