Compare subtitles timings

Hi guys,
I'll begin by explaining what I want to do. I have the english subtitles in sync with a movie. I have the french subtitles that aren't totally in sync with that same movie. The 2 subtitles match at the beginning (let's say the first hour), but I see there's a slight delay by the end of the movie meaning the french subs were probably made from a version that had less scenes (director cuts vs theatrical cut for example).
What I would like to do is figure out at which moment the delay between the 2 subs occur without having to read each lines of the subs (thus getting spoiled).
What I thought would be the solution is a program analyzing the delay between 2 lines of the same subtitle and comparing them to the other subtitles. If the difference between the delays is bigger than (let's say) 2 seconds, I would like the software to highlight the corresponding line.
Now, we know subtitles from different languages can vary while still matching as some translations need 2 lines in one language, one line in an other. So the little differences shouldn't be underlined as it would give too many (false) results. Does such a software exist?


I've made some searches, tried different softwares (subtitle workshop, subtitle edit, subtitle tool, subtitle creator), but didn't find exactly what I want. Some of them offer subtitle comparison, but it doesn't do exactly what I'm asking for. It doesn't highlight the delays that don't match. (maybe I'm missed, that's not impossible, but I tried)

Any ideas, guys? I'd appreciate any help cause I've been wondering about this for a while.

Did you try playing around with the FPS of the subtitles? Could be the French subs were done at 25fps while the movie itself (and your English subs) are 23.976fps

Such a difference would have a slow gradual difference (like you explained)

Yep, I tried it. It doesn't work. As I said, the subtitles are perfectly in sync till the middle of the movie and have a 30 second difference by the end of it. If I convert 25 to 23,97, it gets too long by several minutes.

Well the only other thing I can think of, other than manually re-syncing them, is to try a thing that I know is in Subtitle Workshop ... maybe other programs as well (not sure).

There's a way in the program to pick the first time in the movie when the first subs should appear. Then you pick the last moment in the movie when the last subs should appear. Everything else MAY then sync up if you do that.

Of course that means loading the movie into the program plus the separate subtitles.

Although I tried this once with subs that were 'wonky' and it didn't sync up and it also wasn't an FPS issue and in the end I gave up because I wasn't about to manually sync them myself.

I am afraid that there is not a perfect solution for yourcase. we sometime have to redo everything (copy and paste every subtitle data to build anew data list)

For you case, SutitlePlus"Bind" function may help a lot, www.subtitleplus.com

SutitlePlus has "Bind" function, which let you tobind two data list (like English and French"), so that it automaticallydisplays the subtitles according to the closesttime in two data lists. which helps the user to edit the subtitles at same time.With "bind" function, The user does not look for where is thecorresponding subtitles each other.

Subtitle Plus do have "compare function" forinternal use at this point, but it wont help much in your case.
