I copied 2 .avi files to my PS3 for playback. AVI file [A] works. But AVI file [B] does not work. But otherwise both [A] and [B] work on my Win7 machine.
I would like to analyze the reason why [B] does not playback on the PS3. What tools should I use to perform the analysis? What information should I be analyzing?

Best thing to do is to copy the MediaInfo TEXT view output and paste it here. That way we know what video and audio codecs are being used and can tell you why it isn't working.

I'm not sure but the 2nd one or the one labeled (B).avi says the following:
GMC : 2 warppoints
My guess that is why the PS3 will not play it and if I'm correct then you'll probably have to re-encode it or look for another version (see if you can find a MKV or MP4 version)."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

I think you might be right. I did a search on 'GMC and PS3' and found a post in a different forum that also suspects that it might be the GMC. In the different forum post the GMC is set to 3 warppoints.
Would it be against the forums rules to provide a posting link to a different forum in order to inject some more input into the topic?

I'm 100% sure PS3 cannot handle GMC (or QPEL)
Most standalone DivX/DVD players cannot handle it either -

XviD Settings for PS3 & XBOX360 Compatibility
https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/311454-XviD-Settings-for-PS3-XBOX360-Compatibility -
If you need to re-encode then I suggest using x264 as that will help to reduce the loss when re-encoding. I would use HandBrake since it is easy-to-use. You can either pick MP4 output (converts the audio to AAC audio) or you can pick MKV output (which can use AC-3 or DTS but make sure you convert DTS to AC-3 in HandBrake) then use tsMuxeR to make the MKV into a M2TS file.
The PS3 has native support for both MP4 and M2TS files.
MP4 is x264 video with AAC audio.
M2TS is x264 video with AC-3 audio.
A MKV with AC-3 audio can be remuxed (without re-encoding nor transcoding) to a M2TS file."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

Incorrect. As was clearly stated multiple times by multiple users the ONLY way to get rid of GMC is to re-encode. Period.
NO standalone player has ever been identified that is capable of playing an AVI with a GMC value greater than 1 warppoint. When you have 2 and 3 warppoints then only a PC can play those. In early to mid 2000s even 1 warppoint would cause almost all players to barf, but in recent years various players have been found that can handle 1 warppoint. For compatibility reasons it's best when encoding to just avoid GMC and Qpel altogether unless you are playing on a PC and care nothing about media player compatibility or have established via your own testing that the player you are using can handle GMC and Qpel. -
avirecomp does Re-encode, with virtualdub and does a damn good job too. Thats why I suggested it. Here is the description from VideoHelp:
"AVI ReComp can be very useful for users who want to clear their AVIs out of GMC or Qpel functions to prepare the clips for standalone DVD players" -
It's for playback on a PS3 so as I said the quality of the re-encode will be better if done using x264
