  1. Hey guys,
I'm very new to backing up / ripping BDs, so I'm after some help to get me started.

I intend to back up much of my collection eventually, but for the moment I only need to copy a handful of discs. Reason being is that I've bought some releases that are unavailable to my region; this small amount doesn't warrant buying a different player, but even if it did, I'm perfectly happy with my PS3 and don't wish to replace it. So if possible, I'd like to make perfect copies of these BDs, with the region locking removed.

At the moment, all I have is a BD burner. I'm assuming this is a lengthy process, so I don't expect detailed replies, although they are welcome of course. Links to guides, software recommendations, and important info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, I look forward to your replies.

I'd try dvdfab hd decrypter first. It doesn't reencode/compress, but you did say you want perfect copies and simply ripping is the only way you'll get that. It's the free part of dvdfab and works much better than the part you pay for. I'm reasonably sure it'd make bd region free copies.

Thanks for the info. And indeed, it's worth mentioning I don't want any squeezing/shrinking/re-encoding. So I'm only interested in solutions that can give me an exact copy, for anyone else who may reply.

  4. Rip (decrypt, copy to hard drive) to ISO image, burn to double-layer BDR with ImgBurn. That's it, exact copy, region-free.

Note that the term "rip" is often misused, most egregiously by DVDFab. They use it when they mean conversion/repackaging/re-encoding, whatever. They should know better. If you use Fab or the free portion thereof, use their copy function.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

and if you really don't believe the ripper removed the region code use ifoedit to do it again. http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/ifoedit-finalprocedures.htm
