Hello everyone, this is my first post here, i have a problem that hopefully will sound easy to you
I need the xvid codec installed as i'm editing avis with virtualdub.
But, when xvid is installed, my movies don't show subtitles (video + audio is fine). I have latest vsfilter 2.41.5803 installed and xvid 1.3.2. Only when I UNINSTALL xvid, then subtitles play fine...
Could you please assist, i've found only very old solutions on google, none apply in my case
Thanks
Dean

Subtitles dont show in virtualdub or in your video player? Which player? What kind of subs? srt? have you tried vlc player?
-
External .srt subtitles dont show in Windows Media Player 12, that's what i use to watch movies
I would prefer NOT changing player -

(sorry or the late reply i had to install and uninstall xvid to get the info)
Correct, it is the DirectVobSub (VSFilter) 2.41.5803 i have installed. THere is no later version for me to install.
While xvid is NOT installed (so subs show correctly), there IS a green arrow in the system tray when playing videos in WMP12 with subtitles.
When xvid IS installed (a&v ok, no subs), there is NOT the green arrow, there is the xvid logo in the tray.
No haali splitter, i've only installed Lazy Man's MKV, but it was installed much later than the xvid-vsfilter problem existed.
Thank you -
If you prefer to continually hit yourself over and over again in the crotch with a hammer rather than NOT hitting yourself there, go ahead. This is what using WMP is like. Your problem is solvable rather easily by using another player, but if you insist on using WMP then my rule of not helping to encourage insanity applies and I'm done here. Good luck. You will need it with WMP. -

Which version of VSFilter did you install? There's a 32-bit version, and a 64-bit version. From your computer details, you're using 8GB of RAM, so I'm assuming you're using a 64-bit version of Windows. I can't remember whether or not Media Player is a 64-bit program under 64-bit versions of Windows, at the moment, or 32-bit.
The reason it's important is this - 32-bit players and encoders will only work with 32-bit codecs and filters. The same is true for 64-bit players and encoders.
No haali splitter, i've only installed Lazy Man's MKV, but it was installed much later than the xvid-vsfilter problem existed.Hadn't heard of Lazy Man's MKV, before.), Lazy Man's installs at least Matroska Splitter, RealMedia Splitter, and VSFilter 2.37. Did that package already work for you with Media Player, in the past? I believe all of those components are 32-bit, though I can't say I know how well the Matroska splitter works, as I've never used it.

Thank you for your informative message, i appreciate it.
My system is 64bit Windows 7 Professional. I did indeed have the 32-bit vsfilter installed (VSFilter_2.41.5803_x86), i uninstalled it and installed the 64-bit just now, no change, subs do not show in WMP12 when xvid is installed.
I have lazy man's mkv (this is the only external codec i have installed - apart from xvid which i need only for virtualdub) because it only installs minimal stuff, and yes it works with my WMP12.
I have also just tried an older 64bit Medial Player Classic I still have installed, and the subs play even with xvid installed. So there must be a setting in WMP12, or what you're saying about it being 32bit. But then again it would have worked with the 32bit vsfilter...
I could not find a 64bit xvid codec though. -

But, when xvid is installed, my movies don't show subtitles
-
And that's exactly what it is not. XviD is a video codec, and don't display,
encode or decode subtitles.
Subtitles are an absolutely different kind of streams, that has to be displayed
by the player, not by the video codec.
In fact, as you should've known subtitles are mostly text files. -
I suggest you install Haali Media Splitter. I use SPlayer Portable to play most video types on my PC. When I need to check PGS subtitles are working then I run the video in WMP 12. I always have xvid installed. I just tried an .avi file in WMP 12 with external .srt file with the same base name as the video. It picked it right up. Install Haali and most of your problems should be over.
edit: just make sure the player has the same "bitness" as the plugins,filters,etc..
You're probably better of with a 32 bit player and plugins even if you're on a 64 bit system.
The 64 bit stuff just hasn't been around long enough for all the pieces to integrate.http://milesaheadsoftware.org/

It's not a panacea. VLC has been crash-prone on 2 of my systems since 1.0 when it was rock solid previously. Seems like as soon as they added PGS support it went south. It may work fine on your rig. But it's not a lock like it used to be.

Possibly there is a problem in the latest "official" Xvid installer
FWIW, I prefer Jawor's builds of Xvid to the "official" package by Koepi et al.

BTW, MPEG-4 ASP (Divx and Xvid) are "best"decoded by ffdshow or LAV Filters, for example.
