I'm a bit perplexed as to how to get Windows 7 to read Cover art in MKV files via windows explorer. The method i used before in Windows XP worked like a charm. MKVMerge add cover art as an attachment and use Haali splitter to extract the thumbnail. Which gave me this

Sadly, since i have upgraded to Windows 7, i have been unable to get the cover art to display. I can get 64bit haali to extract thumbnails of a clip of the movie for a thumbnail but every attempt i have made to get windows explorer to read the cover art file in the MKV has failed. I am not really interested in using windows media center for this. I just want to view these thumbnails in windows explorer once again. Has anyone been able to do this?

    Hi,

Havn't tried it yet, for now I only work with 32x codecs. But something is said about Icaros Thumbnailing in (Shark007 codec pack).
If you try, you also need to install the 64x version of Shark.

    See Attachement...

    Good luck!;)

I tried Icaros and it does not preview the cover art rather it does the same thing as Haali and takes a snap shot, Tried every setting available within it and nothing shows me my cover art.

    Thanks anyways

    Download Shark007 32bit (windows8 version)
Download Shark007 64bit version (mkv thumbnailing only works with 64bit)
Download MKVMergeGUI to make your own .mkv_file with CoverArt

    Info1 > http://nl.wikibooks.org/wiki/Werken_met_MKVToolnix/Printversie = Dutch
    info2 > http://www.matroska.org/technical/cover_art/index.html

For .Mp4 files I recommend MkvToMp4.exe > This programme ables to download (iMDB) MetaData to the file.

    Succes!

  7. bjeunink, I have tried to do what you said with no success and am pulling my hair out. I have been searching for hours until I found this post and thought I had it but can't get it to work.

I downloaded the Shark007 32 bit win8 version and the win7 64 bit version (maybe I need win8 version of this to?) as well as mkvmerge.

I opened my mkv in merge and added cover.jpg and completed muxing

Still no cover art showing. I am trying to get the cover art to show in Windows Media Center. Funny enough it is for kids DVD's so the kids can watch there movies. Its easier to load them all in WMC then have them changing dvds.

What settings do I need in 64 bit Shark007, maybe I am missing something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  8. OK, now I am losing my mind. I got the cover art to work in Windows Explorer, but it doesn't show up in windows media center...

So close, what am I missing?

  9. Well the internet is a great place. I had to add a Folder.jpg to get it to show up in WMC.

Thanks for posting this as it helped me a ton.

Try putting the .jpeg into the folder next to video file and name the jpeg file Folder.jpg
The jpeg in the video (mkv) file should be called cover.jpg

That should do it! Good Luck

Ps. For use with MediaCenter you can download MyMovies. This prgramme provides you with MetaData for alle your movies and series. There is a free and payed version depending the options you want. And also available for Android or IOS
