So I've recorded some stuff on my computer and the file originally is AVI so in Avidemux I just keep the format AVI since it works for and can be uploaded to YouTube. When I convert the file to compress it, since it's raw and takes up 40gigs of my HD each 15 minutes, it won't open up, or display the time, length, and size of the file like the other successfully converted files. The settings are the same as the other's and they work, but this time it doesn't work. There's nothing apparently wrong with the original file since it plays just fine, and it's more than just this file.

Any ideas on what it could be? I've tried converting it multiple times to see if the encoding process just messed up somehow, but it's failed multiple times in a row. Mind you when I rename the file to put the file extension .avi at the end unlike the one's that work this one will only display the .avi file logo on the file as a preview, unlike the others where it displays the beginning of the video.

Post a report of what mediainfo says about the converted file.

BTW 'Avi' is not a format. It is a container for many different codecs. Avi Logo ?

Hold on converting again, I deleted the file a bit back because it was useless to me.

I don't know whether or not Avidemux is correct, or what the program means by format, but it says AVI is a format.

    AVI logo, as in this

What avidemux settings are you using ?

And what codec ? (that can be answered when you post the mediainfo report assuming that the new conversion is the same as the previous one)

Codec wise I'm using H.264, I've used Xvid before but it gave me relatively the same issue which is why I changed, but I do like the clarity under compression a lot better on H.264.

Avidemux settings wise I have no idea what you mean, like settings in the codec?

Post the mediainfo report and we can take it from there.

Better still. If the video is still faulty, upload it somewhere so that we can all take a closer look at it.

Okay I loaded the file in MediaInfo, gives me container and general information, but I don't know how to find the report and so on.

Nevermind I found out how to do it.

A 15 min avc at 4 gig !! - your PC is probably choking trying to play that back. It is likely that your avidemux setting are totally wrong.

I can not duplicate your result completely but I notice the lack of a video ID. I can only achieve that if I set video to 'Copy' which is the default setting. That also means your video codec has not changed - it is still uncompressd.

Try this (or even experiment with others)

    Set video to mpeg-4 AVC

    Set audio to mp3(lame)

    Set format to mp4

To get the best out of h.264 you will have to learn all the settings of the codec. No one here will teach you that.

    Save the video as filename.mp4

Report back with a new mediainfo report and if the video now plays.
