AviDemux is what I use for doing exactly that....with MPEG2 files. Should work the same with other stuff. Just make sure you set the video settings to "COPY".....then adjust the audio settings accordingly.

  3. other options:

you can use audacity to encode to the final audio format as well (or leave it as wav), then use avi-mux gui to "join" it back together

or vdub audio=>audio from other file (video and audio direct stream copy mode) , or vdub can encode audio as well

Then you extracted it wrong. I just drag my video files into GoldWave, then save the audio as WAV files.

I use "Maximize Volume" and the DEFAULT setting.
Save it as a WAV file.
....then replace the audio in AviDemux.

  8. What format is the original audio in? I guess it'd be MP3 or AC3?

If it's MP3 I'd open the AVI with VirtualDubMod, select Streams/Streams List from the top menu, then select Demux and save the MP3 audio to your hard drive. The same process can be used for AC3, or VirtualDubMod will save the audio as a wave file.

If it's MP3, open the extracted audio using MP3DirectCut and use it's normalise function to normalise the MP3, then resave it as a new file. No re-encoding required. Once that's done, use VirtualDubMod to replace the old audio with the new version (if you've extracted the audio with VirtualDubMod, working out how to disable the old and add the new audio to the AVI shouldn't be too hard) and resave it as a new AVI, selecting "Direct Stream Copy" for the video while saving.

If it's AC3, once it's extracted you'll have to convert it while changing it's volume.
