A container of a video file can be avi,mkv,mp4 etc..,what the container files have in them depends on the type, they can contain avc, divx, xvid codecs and subtitles and chapter files. To know about them use mediainfo. I think, therefore i am a hamster.

That info is always found in Mediainfo in the "General" category under the "Format" field. Note that the way it treats Quicktime and WMV and DivX containers may not be like you expect them: QT is considered by Mediainfo to be a subset of MP4 (not quite accurate), WMV is (accurately) described as ASF and DivX is (accurately) described as AVI.

[RANT]Personally, I wish this was made a little clearer to end users to end confusion or misinformation. QT is a sister format to MP4 (MP4 being a fork), WMV and ASF are the same thing (the extension being the only difference) so why not call it WindowsMedia/ASF?, and DivX could be labelled "DivX variant of AVI" or something (since it can support menus & chapters where normal AVI does NOT). There's a few more things about this app & Gspot that I wish was straightened out! [/RANT]
